As the title states. Can I store RO/DI and Saltwater in Food safe barrels outside?

My situation and thoughts:

I live in a pretty small house and cannot really "afford" to lose the real estate to store RO/DI and Saltwater in the garage or in any other indoor space at the moment. Im nearing the end of my tank build, which includes full APEX controls for ATO and water changes. I have it working great using seperate saltwater and freshwater buckets that i lug into the house every week.

Needless to say, RODI and saltwater is the last thing that I have left to automate. My plan is to tap off my hose spiggot in my backyard and lead to a RO/DI unit mouted on my outside wall that opposes my tank. The RO/DI unit will fill a 55g food safe container with a manual float valve for shutoff. Very basic setup. I cant imagine much that could go wrong there. I will spare you the rest of the setup until i get off my butt for a build thread.

For the life of me, i just cannot find any info on whether or not it is bad to store this RO/DI (and later saltwater) outside.

The barrel would be sealed. I figure that i should get a dark barrel for any sunlight. The barrel and RO/DI unit would be snug to the side of the house, under a small overhang and relatively shaded. But it would still be exposed.

The technical side is not an issue on this. I just find any info on whether or not this can be done. Too hot, too cold, spoil the water, etc..

Anyone doing this? Problems?

The only thing I can see being an issue is temperature

I guess what im trying to figure out is. Is there such a thing as too high or too low temperature? And what could it really do to the water?

I'm in cali. We have pretty mild temperatures in comparison to most areas. I cant imagine freezing being much of an issue. Heat on the other hand does get over 100 degrees in my area.

bump. So is my only concern that I will be dumping too cold or too hot of water into my tank? Or will it actually spoil the water if kept outside?

Temp would be the only concern I would see. It's no different that keeping it in the garage, as long as it stayed sealed. Of course I think water would boil in my garage.

The only thing you should be concerned about is what the water is stored in. Water comes from "outside". It freezes and thaws and it is still water in either state. Just be sure you store both the salt and fresh water in suitable containers. That you can Google.

OK good. thanks for the confirmation. I plan on having a second stage which pumps water from the "food safe container" into a small resevoir inside my house. This should stabilize the temperature to somewhere near 75 degrees in a short period of time.

So as long as I don't cause the water to spoil for some unknown reason, i guess it looks like i will be ok.

thanks all
