After calling around the Charleston area and getting pricing to drill my tank, I decided to purchase a glass bit and drill it myself. Here is the process I used successfully.

Started by placing some plumbers putty around the outline of the hole desired. Then filled this with water to keep the bit cool during the process.

what brand of tank do you have? I have a 55gal aquaon from petco and it says on the bottom not to drill it but I was wondering if thats just because it will reduce the integrity of the tank.

you got lucky. i had a 55 that said the bottom was tempered but i figured the sides were good.

i could be wrong nut 55s with 3/8 glass can be drilled. But most 55s with 1/4 glass cannot be. Has anyone ever seen a tempered 3/8 55?
