How is the sand live in a sealed bag?

That's a good question, because I don't think it's "live" either.

They should put dead sand on those bags

Yea, I asked a LFS owner and he said the bags are special design to let air in and keep the water from leaking out. Right, I guess I have stupid on my forehead.

Well, I hate to say it but...

Your LFS is correct. The bags pass oxygen and other gasses. I use similar bags, the Kordon brand, for shipping fish.

that hard to believe since air and gases are smaller than water, but who knows, three men and a women was sent to out space last friday. So how long can it sit on the self and still be consider live sand?

Certain gases can absorb or pass through cartain materials. It's like an RO membrane. They also sell those green bags for veggies that let gases escape but none to enter. Its pretty common.
