sro 3000 setup

I am working on setting up my sro 3000 ext. It looks like it has 2 connections for water input. Is this right?

Yes one is a barb and the other is a PVC converter.

do I need to use them both or can one be capped off?

No there is only one spot for the feed but comes with two different adapters. The other spot with the valve is a drain line for the skimmer.

Does the return from the skimmer need to be above or below the water line in the sump? I'm assuming it has to be above.

The output needs to be above the water surface unless you vent the plumbing then it can be submersed.
