So I met the talented man of Tampa Bay Saltwater today, and got 20lbs. of Live Rock, and all I have to say is WOW- this stuff is LIVE! He told me he got some really nice rock picked out for me and he was right. :bounce1:

Just opened the box:

Everything in it:

And a surprise!:

I absolutely am in love with this rock now. There are tons of these little feather duster looking things everywhere. I just sat in front of the tank for half an hour just watching all of the life. This rock puts all my other tanks to shame.

Just sat down again, but with a flashlight, and found a Porcelain crab, a Gorilla crab, what might be a red Emerald crab, and am definitely am hearing a Mantis. I can't wait to see what will come out tonite! :)

I think I have an anemone to, it's just hiding under the rock. -.-

The gorilla crabs are not as bad as most people make them out to be, when they are tiny they are great cleaners, when the get past nickel sized it starts to become a different story.

Just because you hear clicking does not mean you have a mantis, other things, especially pistol shrimp make clicking noises inside the rock. If you have a mantis you will know soon enough as they tend to be pretty brave and roam out in the open.

Nice rock by the way!

I had to get a Gorilla crab out of one of my other tanks because he kept killing my Clean Up Crew, and it wasn't fun... It might be a Pistol, but I have a dedicated tank for a Mantis just a few feet away, and it sounds pretty similar. I don't how much of a different sound the two makes.

The whole car ride home, there wasn't any noise from the box. As I was unpacking it, still nothing. The second I put the rock in the tank and step back to look at it, I hear him. :headwallblue:

I went hunting tonight with nothing but a flashlight and a feeding stick with a piece of krill looking for the mantis or any other hitch hikers. Every time I went looking on one side, I'd hear popping from the other side. :headwallblue: I swear their screwing with me. :hmm3:

My bet would be pistol. They are just as loud as the Mantis. In my rock I had about 6 pistols and 2 mantis shrimps. The mantis were easy to spot because they were pretty curious and poked their heads out a lot.

If food won't bring them out, then they are prolly pistol shrimps.

AlexS95

That's what I'm starting to think.

I caught two crabs in the tank today. One was extremely small and looked like a baby gorilla so I out him in the sumo of another tank. But, the other one I caught was a bit bigger and I decided to release him back in the tank, after I got a few pictures. Now that I know where it's den is it shouldn't be to hard if I have to take him out later.

I found a really small pistol shrimp (about 1/4"...), it has a blue head with an orange claw. No way I could ever get him out...

That is some gorgeous rock...I think I might have to convince my wife we need more rock for our tank. TBS rock makes mine look sad. ha

jdegrasse
07/29/2011, 01:59 PM
It would be extremely difficult to pull them out. You get used to the constant noise and they don't do any harm, rather they eat detritus and stuff.

That crab on your hand -- he gets big really fast -- and mean. Those red eyes mark the devil :-) They sit on the gorgs and pull out the polyps for a meal with those pointy claws.

jdegrasse
07/29/2011, 02:02 PM
BTW you have a lot of nice sponge on the rock. Consider carbon dosing. It will entice pelagic bacteria to grow, which not only absorbs nitrate and phosphate, but your sponges will dine off the bacteria and continue to grow.

Isn't there where you pour vodka in the tank? I can't do that.... Only 16 yrs old. :crazy1:

You can use vinegar too.

AlexS95

Do you have a link on anything can read up on for that before I start pouring stuff in my tank? lol

jdegrasse
07/29/2011, 09:32 PM

The concept is the same whether you use vodka or white vinegar. Except you have to add more vinegar.

So I put this piece of base rock in the other day, and crabs just seem to run in to and hide. I've been able to take out 3 or 4 baby Gorilla crabs so far. I didn't think there were that many, but almost every time to I shine a flashlight on it, there's another one hiding in it.

Urgh, I had a heater malfunction and put the tank up in the high 80's. All of the orange on the top left rock pretty much melted off.

http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/iTeeeeeeeeeeeeen/th_DSC01326.jpg

Compare that to Day 1:
http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/iTeeeeeeeeeeeeen/th_DSC01307.jpg

It's pretty upsetting to say the least, especially since I had my new fish from DD arrive today.

http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/iTeeeeeeeeeeeeen/DSC01330.jpg (http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/iTeeeeeeeeeeeeen/DSC01330.jpg)

I had to put him in my 5 gallon Mantis Shrimp tank for now, until I get the 20 back in shape. So far I did a 10 gallon water change, will do another in a few days if it doesn't clear up by then.

I was hunting gorilla crabs for months when I first got the rock and I think I got them all out by now. I got quite a few pistol shrimps too, from neon orange to neon green ones. The other day I saw an almost all black one hiding next to a snail.

All of the sponges and tunicates on mine slowly died off but I knew it was just a matter of time. I do wish I knew more of how to keep them alive when I had them because they really brought a lot of cheery oranges, reds, and purples to the tank but this was my first tank. Hell, even today I have no idea how to keep those alive!

The tree sponges and ball sponges I got from Richard are still alive though.

I see you also got a decorator arrow crab hitchhiker. I watched mine grow from a tiny spec to about 2 inches big. Unfortunately he started picking on my zoanthids. I saw 2 neon green zoas on his legs then he started to actually eat another set. Sadly I had to let him go.

I do also have an emerald crab and he grew really fast as well. His body is about the size of a quarter now. His claws aren't sharp so I figured he'd be fine to leave in there but I give everything in the tank 3 chances. If they attack anything 3 times I take them out. So far he just likes to scavenge around and doesn't bother anything.

AlexS95
08/05/2011, 11:27 AM
How did you get the Pistols out?

PorkchopExpress
08/05/2011, 08:27 PM
lol ya right...i haven't even tried to get any out nor have i seen a reason to as they (so far) haven't bothered anything and are actually really cute...these guys peek out from time to time and very quickly retract back into their crevice as soon as they see any movement so i have no clue how you would get them out if you really wanted to besides taking the entire rock out and trying to flush them out that way...the only hitchhikers i've purposely taken out are cirolanid isopods, all gorilla crabs, a large decorator crab that i caught destroying corals, a small decorator arrow crab that started eating zoanthids, and dark colored bristle worms if i see them in the sand and can catch them...otherwise i love the life that came on these rocks

AlexS95
08/05/2011, 11:00 PM
Oh, woops, I mis-read your post. I thought you said you got out a lot of pistols.

StephLionfish
08/06/2011, 12:10 AM
Dang that really sux about your heater...Hopefully some of it will grow back.
Haha, OK, I thought that fish was a sponge of some sort at first :lol2: I reread where you said " DD" and realized the thing has eyes.
That little fish is probably the most adorable thing I've ever seen :inlove:
I've been wanting an angler for a while now ( angler right? ) How big is he?

AlexS95
08/06/2011, 05:22 PM
Yep. It's a Painted Angler (A. pictus) that I got off of Diver's Den last week. Right now, he's a little under 2". The measurement on DD said 1 7/8". If your looking for an Angler, I would definitely suggest looking at Diver's Den because there have been a ton of them up lately. He is definitely one of my favorite fish, tied only with my Ray. :spin1: I love the way he moves: like a giant in slow-mo. It's a nice change from the constant swimming of Tangs and whatnot. I'm uploading a bunch of pictures of him right now, I'll post a link to them so I don't spam up the page. :spin2:

AlexS95
08/06/2011, 05:27 PM
Here's the link to the album (http://s640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/iTeeeeeeeeeeeeen/Five%20Gallon%20Fun/). All that's in it is a small Chromis, my Mantis, and the Angler for now.

StephLionfish
08/06/2011, 05:46 PM
Ray? As in...stingray? At 16.....liar. lol
Is that a Wennerae mantis? Where'd you get him? I'm thinking on saving up for one from TBS. I'd be a little concerned the mantis would take a chunk out of the angler.

I really like the angler...I'm surprised I didn't see it on DD. Is the 20 going to be his own tank?

AlexS95
08/06/2011, 05:58 PM
Haha, yes, a stingray. There's a bunch of pictures of him on that Photobucket account. I'm not positive on the ID, but I'm pretty sure it's a Wennerae; I got him from my LFS. I would definitely recommend getting one from TBS. My mantis hasn't shown any interest in attacking fish. If I didn't stick feed him, and made him hunt, I'm pretty sure he'd starve... lol, so I'm not really worried- I'm more worried about the Angler eating him whole... xD

StephLionfish
08/06/2011, 06:09 PM
You have a shark too??? What size tank are they in? I love your Volitan. Has his fins healed up? ( If I remember correctly...it was your thread that I saw this) Mind telling me what extra you do for the shark and ray? As far as maintenance goes?

AlexS95
08/06/2011, 07:42 PM
They're in my 220. The only real thing I have to do is stick feed them because their tankmates are always trying to get all the food. They're starting to learn that when they come up to the top it's easier for them to get food. And yes, the Vol's fins are all healed now, and I can pretty much watch him grow. :mixed:

So Richard gave me another 20lbs to replace the damages, and so I took some of the old rock out and put it another tank that had mostly base rock in it, and then put it all in the tank, except for one piece. Right now, I just have it all sitting in the tank, I will have to do make it look good later because I have family coming over.

All these creatures coming off your rock....I'd like to just set up a 5 gal with 3 lbs of rock and watch all the creatures on it. No need for fish! lol

AlexS95
08/07/2011, 01:10 PM
He didn't ship it, I went to pick it up. It's only like a 20-30 minute drive each way. But yeah, it's really great. He said these were just in the Gulf the day before yesterday. :beachbum:

I finally went with this rock set-up:
http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/iTeeeeeeeeeeeeen/DSC01496.jpg

As you may be able to see, I moved the Angler into the 20gal a few minutes ago, and already eating the shrimp I had in there waiting for him. So far, he's eaten two, and I got to video the second one.

That video was awesome... I think it's funny how the poor shrimp was looking at the "food"
Shrimp: " I want it, I want it, I want i-"
**********CHOMP***********
Ah, don't feel bad shrimp, I thought the thing was a sponge the first time I saw it too...
Angler is adorable :inlove:
Nice scape, epoxy or the law of gravity? Looks like the stuff is starting to come back.

( Saw the mantis/angler vid too. I laughed when the shrimp got into position...what with the smashers out and all :lol2: )

On my mantis thread, you said about the lighting you have; is this the tank it's over?

AlexS95
08/18/2011, 11:46 PM
The rocks are just sitting there, no epoxy or anything. That middle piece is just giant, I wasn't sure how to make it 'fit', and I just eventually got to this. I think it was my 5th try. I am loving my Angler, he's so awesome...!
I have that lighting over my 220g. I have some Marineland crappy LEDs over this tank (that were meant for FW, but I converted it to salt) but I'm trying to get my friend to make me some DIY LEDs... If you watch any of the other videos like the ones with the ray and eel, that is the lighting I was talking about.

Great picture lol The little angler looks so mad... and now because of you I think I'm going to have to set up another tank for an angler.. -.- Of course I fall in love with the creatures that require their own tank...

AlexS95
08/19/2011, 04:23 PM
Me to! Because of seeing all of namxas' pictures, I'm acclimating another fish to this tank... This tank was originally going to be for Cuttlefish (Sepia bandensis) or a dwarf octopus (O. mercatoris), and then I saw this Angler for sale, and I had to jump on it because I knew it wouldn't last on DD...

StephLionfish

I just read my post again, and it sounded like I got another Angler, but I was talking about when I got him a few weeks ago, and I got one of the fish Greg often posts pictures of. So far, he hasn't eaten, and looks really thin, so I'm kind of worried. But for the past ten minutes he has been staring at the Grass shrimp I have in the tank that he refused to eat earlier. :hmm5:

AlexS95
08/19/2011, 06:54 PM
I got this guy at a not so L, LFS... In the next tank they had a 'Giant Angler', and OMG that thing was @&(%&!(& AMAZING! It had this coloring (http://www.liveaquaria.com/diversden/ItemDisplay.cfm?c=2733+3&ddid=128169), and was easily 8" long and 6" tall. The thing was a monster! I wanted to get him, but he was 3x the price and I couldn't justify $150 dollars for him, plus that thing could eat my Angler, and we can't have that! I'm hoping he'll eat soon. Tomorrow at work I'll bring home some Ghost shrimp and maybe he won't be as stressed out and will sample a few. :D

StephLionfish
08/19/2011, 08:42 PM
LFS's round here can't seem to get in anything neat. And when they do ( on RARE occasions) they either don't know that it's rare or what it is and treat it with the wrong husbandry or they jack the price up sky rocketed. And I'm talking 4 different LFS's!

AlexS95
08/19/2011, 09:35 PM
I have to go out of town to get interesting things, local FS just don't stock the unusual I like.

Here's the kicker, like I was saying earlier about getting an Octo, I had given up on getting one, and now that I have these fish, they have become available now... Now I'm considering moving the Angler and his new friend to the 5... but I know that's not the smartest thing to do. :angryfire:

StephLionfish

AlexS95
08/19/2011, 11:02 PM
I don't have any more room! lol :( My desk has the 5g and my computer, and right next to me is the dresser with the 20g on it. Unless I want to put a tank on my TV, I don't think I can do that. As much as I want to, the sand/rock/other things was about $150 not including the tank and I don't want to do that again. :crazy1:

rogermccray
08/22/2011, 07:45 AM

As of now, I have no plans to wean them. If I lose my job and stop getting free live foods, then maybe I will. :o I just took down the 5g Mantis tank and combined them in the 20 with adding all of the nicely colored up rock I had in there, and them Mantis is hiding in the rocks right now. When I was moving the rocks out, I was worried because I didn't find him, but I just saw him poking his head out of the mushroom rock. :spin3:

There were never any problems before and now he has even more room to hide and all the fun things it is that Mantis's do, he'll be fine. I'm thinking about getting a Scorpaen caribbaeus and then that'll be it for any more additions.

Haha, I have bought things from Tom before (Ray), and hope to buy a O. briareus or O. hummelincki from him eventually, so I am always checking his in-stock list and am constantly looking through other sites so I usually get an idea of what I want, but don't tell anyone else. After all, imagine if I got you to want an Angler, and you saw the Angler I got on DD before I did, and you got it. I just try to prevent silly things like that by not mentioning it to anyone. ;) Plus, when I go to the store I got the Leaf from I know they definitely carry the more oddball/specialty fish, which is what I love. :bounce2:

I'm fortunate to have 8 LFS within an hour and a half drive, but I only go to 4 regularly. Only one has rare things, one has the occasionally has cool things, and two are the basics but still cool. :) And of course DD where I got the Angler. :D

I'm fortunate to have 8 LFS within an hour and a half drive, but I only go to 4 regularly. Only one has rare things, one has the occasionally has cool things, and two are the basics but still cool. :) And of course DD where I got the Angler. :D

Yeah yeah, quit rubbing it in :p I have two LFS that both completely suck. One has horrendous stock and the other is insanely over-priced. I usually have to drive 1 1/2hrs to either Louisville or Cincinnati to see anything decent for decent prices *sigh*

AlexS95
08/28/2011, 09:43 AM
Like I said, I don't go to all of them for a few reasons, whether it be crappy stock or just how far it is. And there are two of them that I have never been to because they are closed on my day off.

Okay, picture time! He was up front this morning so I had to take advantage of it. I also measured him and he is about 1 3/4", maybe a little more.

I hear you on the microbubbles...have them in my mantis tank, and even in my 210 and they annoy the crap out of me.
And you've seen my pictures...so you know I never clean the glass either
That video was funny. Slooooow motion...and he started walking faster once you couldn't get it on video XD My mantis will do that. All camera shy, then once I take the card out of the camera she starts digging like mad and just... Are those the rocks that the heater boiled?

AlexS95

No, they all were replaced by Richard. :celeb3: The boiled ones went in the 220.

AlexS95

This tank probably has the fish with the most personality... I think it's great.
I tried net-feeding the Leaf today for the first time with the new guy and they kept swimming out of the net and the Scorp just started chasing them around in this tiny tank and made short work; just devoured them. And he will eat krill off of the feeding stick, I'll get a video of it whenever I find the freaking camera! :mad2:

The leaf is neat...I like how it sways, lol.

It's kind of funny how he eats... I mean, with stones you have to play around with them, and with Volitans they just go crazy...he just takes it- no questions asked. lol.
Do you have issues with crud building up on the sand and /or on the rocks? I'm thinking about a powerhead or two for my 20L for that reason.
And how deep is your sand bed?

That is possibly the funniest thing I've seen in a week XD
I guess the CUC figures if the fish walk over/ on each other, they can too.

I hate when I see little pods and such on the glass...cause when I drag the algae scraper at them...I just feel bad for them..

AlexS95
09/15/2011, 06:15 PM
I swear, this tank has had no algae at all. I don't know if my CuC (was 12 Astreas, 12 Blue Legs, and all the free goodies that came with the rock) took it all out before the growth really took off or what. I've lost most the snails because when the Scorp would knock them off the glass when he swam I didn't feel like picking them up...

I just looked over at the tank and the scorp spit out a small rock, he occasionally will get a few when he lunges for Ghost shrimp. :lmao:

StephLionfish
09/15/2011, 07:38 PM
I hate Astreas....by the time they actually eat the algae a centimeter away, the spot they where working on has grown back...

I see my Volitan coughing up sand all the time.. even when it's not feeding time, and there's nothing he could possibly be eating...

I don't see any more micro bubbles.... I hate them. My tank is filled with them...I don't car in my Mantis tank, but in my reef it's annoying when I take pix...

AlexS95

I'm planning on getting a new light for the tank... It will be the Deep Blue 24" T5, but I can't decide between 24w or 48w HO. I don't know if I need that much light, all I plan on is a few Zoas, the mushrooms in there, and some xenia. The price difference is only like $25, but I don't know if I need that much.

StephLionfish

I just love that angler!

Tank looks awesome. What kind of light is it again? How many bulbs?

That scorp is a great deal bigger than the other two...you have some insane luck with creatures not eating each other ( esp. with that mantis and angler!)

AlexS95
09/25/2011, 11:20 AM
It's a Deep Blue Solarmax 2 Bulb HO System. 24" T5 (24w x2) + 4x Moonlight LEDs. It has one daylight and one actinic. As far as eating each other, that was the closest the Angler has ever gotten to the new guy, normally he stays in the back left of the tank. He just went that way because that's where all the food was today. I really don't think the Angler would eat the Mantis, the Mantis is the smartest and the quickest thing in there... The Mantis is scared of the Spotted Scorp, whenever the Scorp is near the right side of the rocks I don't ever see the Mantis, but right now the Scorp is where the Leaf usually is on the top middle, and the Mantis is out scurrying around playing with sand.

I need something to call the Scorp, I am getting tired of saying 'that one' or anything along those lines. :hmm4:

My animals (except for my dogs) tend to die quicker when I name them... call me paranoid, but when I lost all three Lionfish from ich a couple of months ago, and no other fish died....it got me thinking... Esp. since lions are supposed to be bullet-proof.
Besides- Scorp, Leaf, Mantis, and Angler. One big happy family! :artist:

Those zoas are awesome. I can't afford zoas here... way over my budget. Just wait till those two little polyps spread.

You know what would complete the family? A Dendrochirus Barberi ( Hawaiian Lionfish). Those are neat. But, that would be pushing it I guess...You have a lot of messy eaters.

Your live rock is making me want to order from TBS... I'm trying to save up for sand though :(

AlexS95
09/25/2011, 06:59 PM
These Zoas weren't expensive (got all of them for $20), and I like them. Zoas are one of the few corals I actually like, so I don't mind paying a little extra to color up the tank a little bit. I can't wait for the orange ones to spread and cover that ugly little plug. :o

I have been looking for a D. barberi for awhile actually, I wanted to put one in my 220. Since then my direction has changed for that tank, and I don't think I'll be adding much more. BUT, on that note, I found one for sale on one of RC's Sponsors sites, and I considered getting it. I think the reason I have had good luck with nobody eating anyone is because they are all very motionless fish, I don't know how a swimming fish would do. If I really want it, I think I would have to get rid of the Scorp, just to be safe. :( If I did that, I don't think I would have any problems. And I haven't ever kept Dwarf lions, so I don't know how one would react to being in a 20g. But I think barberis are one of the smaller ones, so it wouldn't be to bad.

StephLionfish
09/28/2011, 01:23 PM
A rock of Zoas that size is about 70 bucks here.. o.O There's a rock with some that have lime green faces, and brown skirts, but I refuse to cough up that much money on something I know they could price a lot cheaper.

Yeah... I don't think a D. Barberi would fair well in your 220 with all those beasts... and esp. with that Volitans once he gets some size on him.
And now that I think about it... 20g is on the small side for a D. Barberi.. I had my 2" Fuzzy in a 20g for a while... and once she hit the 3" mark she looked cramped.
Don't you just wish everyone could get along and NOT eat each other?

I've only had one fish confirmed eaten, maybe two. My Angler took out a Chromis when he was in the 5g, and then either my (then) small Volitan or Hamlet took out another Chromis (I don't know for sure, it could have just died then been lost).

Very cool looking tank, never seen fish like those! If you want to keep the sea squirts alive you can target feed them and they will grow and expand but will slowly die if you don't over a few months. The welks will eat your barnicles, cup corals, and limpets if you have any, maybe more but I have seen them eating these items in my tank.Sorry for buttin in on your thread.

No, please post!
I spent to much money today... :worried: I hit my LFS cycle today, including two new ones, so five in total. I got a new fish, but I don't want to post pictures until it makes it through the night because it is being a bit spastic right now, usually not a good thing. :eek1: And corals. One new Ricordia, sort of pink-ish and two Zoa frags. One is a mix of green and red ones (a decent amount of polyps) and another was two polyps of pure awesome under the LED Moonlights. When it does it's whole florescent thing when it glows. :celeb3: I might post a few pictures tomorrow night if he starts acting a bit more... normal. ;)

StephLionfish
10/02/2011, 07:07 PM
Yes, actually, I do. Only I don't have a tank for it :( Are you replacing it with something? Or why the need to give Mr. Awesome Scorp away?

EDIT: Oh, nvm... saw on the other thread why.

AlexS95
10/02/2011, 09:21 PM
Yeah, I want to get a smaller Scorp, ideally an Ambon, but those are hard to keep. I'm thinking either a C. multibarbus or A. taenionotus. I'm most likely just going to take him to my LFS and see if I can find a better home from him. He will eat krill off of a stick, but not very eagerly. Once I get him eating better that will help him find a new tank... lol He might even end up in the 220g one day. xD

StephLionfish

Does the red stuff usually melt away? I ask because I got 50 #s of rock in my tank sunday and all the bright red stuff was gone by yesterday. :( I had one large rock like yours that was covered and it is all gone now.

Urgh, I had a heater malfunction and put the tank up in the high 80's. All of the orange on the top left rock pretty much melted off.

http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/iTeeeeeeeeeeeeen/th_DSC01326.jpg

Compare that to Day 1:
http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu122/iTeeeeeeeeeeeeen/th_DSC01307.jpg

It's pretty upsetting to say the least, especially since I had my new fish from DD arrive today.

I had to put him in my 5 gallon Mantis Shrimp tank for now, until I get the 20 back in shape. So far I did a 10 gallon water change, will do another in a few days if it doesn't clear up by then.

AlexS95
10/07/2011, 04:15 PM
I had a heater bust and the tank was in the 80's or 90's, so it all melted away practically overnight. Maybe the same thing happened to you? I didn't notice the heat until I put my hand in the water.

I had a heater bust and the tank was in the 80's or 90's, so it all melted away practically overnight. Maybe the same thing happened to you? I didn't notice the heat until I put my hand in the water.

Nah, nothing was wrong with mine. The temp was fine that's why I was wondering about it.

StephLionfish
10/11/2011, 12:22 AM
That Hammer is a Torch Coral. They are both in the genus Euphyllia.
I went to the LFS today, and saw a quarter size shell with 4 polyps of the pink zoas in your first zoa pic. I asked her how much, and she said $20. :hmm4: Wow. And they fragged it off their own colony too!

Speaking of heaters going rogue... my heater tried to boil my mantis yesterday... You can't trust the things.

Your tank is going to look even more amazing once those corals get some size on them!

AlexS95
10/11/2011, 11:31 AM
Hammer, Torch, Frogspawn; all the same thing to me. ;) And every time I go to look at my tank after a few hours, it is knocked over. I don't know who knocks it over, the Angler or the Scorp, or even a curious Mantis, but it is annoying. :angryfire:
That particular frag I got was $10 or $15, I'm lucky I have some good stores. I have a friend who works at a coral wholesaler so hopefully he can help me get some nice Zoas for cheaper. :bounce2:

And, heaters are evil.

Tank is still looking awesome. I think your new light brings out the colors of your fish better.

So, none of your fish swim around? (I'm a little ignorant about anglerfish)

AlexS95
10/12/2011, 12:45 PM
The Angler swims every once in awhile, but not a lot (like 2x a month). The Scorp swims when I'm not looking at him, if I am across the room can I see him swimming. The Leaf just hops around.

I think that Leaf is too forgiving... I mean, I know he blends in... and the whole "Looks like a rock, sways like a rock.." But, come on... I like that second picture in the post before the video. It shows his annoyance lol.

I like how the Leaf just falls over after he sucks the shrimp in.

AlexS95

It's kind of amusing, he uses a lot of energy to lunge them like that, and then he can't support himself.

So, I got a new rock with some zoas on it, but they're all closed. I'll take pictures when they open. Aaaaaand, I ordered the Hawaiian Green Lion (D. barberi) from PIA... :worried: (I'm taking the scorp into my LFS in the next few days. I doubt anyone will buy him quickly, so I'll still see him almost everyday... :hmm5:) They lowered the price from originally $50 to only $20, and I just couldn't not buy him after that.

On a side note, I like that Hermit in #4. Although, that doesn't look like a crab shell...
It's a good thing Ghosties are only .99.. You've got a lot to feed ;)

AlexS95

I actually got 10 Zebra Hermits from my PIA order, Kevin had to feed him de-shelled hermit since he didn't have any other live foods so he threw some in... And I hate to say this, but $.99 for a Ghost shrimp!?! Since I work at an LFS I just take them for free, but even if I didn't they are only ten for $1.49.

The Barberi is so pretty...
There's a black angler at the lfs that I've been staring at... I wish I had a tank that's not being occupied.

AlexS95
11/12/2011, 09:50 PM
The barberi eats krill, but I didn't find out until yesterday. I was trying to find the Mantis with the feeding stick and he ran into it and I started dragging the krill on the sand to make it look 'alive-ish' and he ate it. Considering the other 2 only eat live, I don't think I'll go through the trouble of trying to feed him frozen.

StephLionfish
11/14/2011, 08:23 PM
I think once they are eating frozen it's more fun. I'm not a chef by any means, but I can try to feel like one when I shred a lobster tail, or slice 'n dice a salmon and lightly douse with Selcon :D
Just make sure the Ghosties are getting good quality foods... or else they're about as nutritious as McDonald's french fries...

AlexS95
11/15/2011, 08:56 PM
I gut load all the Ghosties at my store, and then again when I bring them home.
I ordered a new guy from DD, but I don't want to mix him with these guys, so I made a little acclimation box to hold him for a little while until I can set up my next tank (is a 10g). I'm just about to place my order for it... :)

AlexS95
11/16/2011, 06:21 PM
Okay, my new little guy arrived from DD today, and I got my rock from Richard today (15lbs). I had to set up the tank all today in a few hours, I had to quickly paint some sides black, set the sand and water up, get the rock, blah blah blah. I don't have a light yet, so I can't really tell how my scape looks yet, but it sure is colorful! I'll see if I can get a picture with flash when it settles down a little bit.

So jealous of those zoas.. I was in Washington for a week last week, and I went crazy on frags. The prices of corals in Seattle are so much cheaper than here. Of course, I didn't have room for more than 5 corals to take on the plane :(
That close up pic of the Leaf is awesome. I see a certain somebody is stepping on him in it..lol

Is that a Batfish? Those things get huuuge. Failed? He not make it?

FTS of both tanks? Coral crouchers are so awesome.

AlexS95
02/02/2012, 10:17 AM
No, the batfish didn't make it. Someone beat the crap out of it, but I didn't see any aggression towards him so I have no idea who did it. :/

I'll clean the glass and get a fts when the lights come one.

I would do a search on eBay of 'live corals'. I've gotten a few frags from there, all captive grown frags of usually nice /cheapish/ zoos and whatnot... Shipping depending on where you are located can be fairly cheap aswell.

StephLionfish

I'd say like 90% of the sellers on eBay are either from California or Fl, and I try to buy from other people on Fl. so shipping isn't more than $10. :rolleye1:

Need a really small tank; they are not an active or outgoing fish by any means and you can lose them. During the first week I thought one died but he was just hiding on the bottom of a rock in the back corner of the tank... Need to be target fed within an inch of where they are hiding.
