Just buy a couple pounds of live rock from your LFS and fill the rest with dry rock. That'll be cheaper than buying all live rock from anywhere.

People who are breaking down their tanks or downsizing, IMO. That's how I bought mine. I got some nice fiji and tonga pieces for under $3 a pound when calculated out.

There is a real good deal for 70 lbs of live rock on Ebay right now with some corals on it already for $140 + $45 shipping for my area.

I bought most of mine off Craigslist. I lurk there almost as much as I do here.

If I could do it again, I would get dry rock with a little bit of high quality live rock to seed the tank. Other than that, look for local people breaking down their tank, Ive seen it for 1-1.50/lb

+1 on dry rock + HQ LR
I would go with Marco rocks for base and seed it with some good LFS LR

If you're planning to buy any dry rock at all, I recommend Steve's at Reefrock.net I love their rock and service and the price is great!
He's one of the forum sponsors... Check it out for yourself.

Buy local.. classified ads.
Buying from bulk from warehouses are expensive, plus you have to cure the rock, rock also leaches mad phosphates.

How come every time someone asks where to buy live rock so many people respond with buy dry rock? They would have asked that is they wanted to know. It makes searching threads so much more time consuming.

Agreed. I think the craigslist and classified is a great idea. Too bad you dont live close to me. About $0.30 a kilo.

Sometimes when you start out you don't know the difference between dry and live rock. When I started I thought of live rocks only till I asked here and chose dry base and few live. More safer with bad hitchhiker. There's nothing wrong with giving or pointing people in the right direction or giving them other options. That's what the forum is all about.

I found a guy in my local club that was breaking down a tank. I bought 75 lbs of sand and 150 lbs of live rock out of his 400g tank. He sold it all to me for $100.
Local clubs and craigslist are best options for cheap.

IME I do not care for the man made rock as much as the ancient rock. I have both and am afraid I'm still old school, man made is just not as porous and will never contain the same count on de-nitrifying bacteria
Oh yeah. If you do go the dry rock route, don't waste your time w/ X amount of live rock to seed the dry. That is a myth. The bacteria will grow w/ only an ammonia source. Only thing to seed would be Coraline algae and that will come on the inverts and frags you place in the tank. I'm not saying it hurts to do this but it just is not needed.

I've been fortunate to get some quality live rock from liveaquaria. They have a sale on a box of 45lbs every few weeks and just ask for diversity and I've been very pleased. If not that, then dry is probably your best bet for low cost. If money were know option, I would get "the package" from Tampa Bay Saltwater. They have some sweet stuff.
