I have just acquired two plankton reactors. My idea is to culture phytoplankton and zooplankton for my reef aquarium, obviously.

Since I know nothing of growing phytoplankton, I'd like to get some pointers. Some questions first:

1) Do I need to seed the unit? I mixed new salt water, connected the airpump and the water is moving well. I know I need to add iron and iodine supplements I assume as food for the phytoplankton, but I cannot see how I introduce the first phytoplankton cultures?

2) How do I know the culture is growing and that it is not just dead?

3) If I want to use this to feed rotifers, where do I get rotifers from? My LFS seems dumbfounded when I asked them.

You need to be introduced to FloridaAquaFarms.com. I also used to culture phyto. The only thing I tell you NOT TO DO is use Miracle Grow for Phyto food. FAF sells food that works great. They also sell the rotifers and everything you else you need to start your cultures. They also have information and advice.
