My former tank was a 375g System, (275g DT); 4 months ago I bought my new home and decided to go bigger, also planned a fishroom for it.

As there was not too much space inside the house (And of course, Wife was not going to allow it too LOL) I designed it on the backyard with a Pergola in between the fishroom and the house.

First off, some general specs and equipment list:

Fishroom:
Depth: 9'
Width: 15'
Height:7'

System:
The main In-Wall display is Eurobraced with 1/2" glass (Normal glass not Low Iron) with external overflow.

The overflow has three dursos (Bean Animal System) and return line:

Display Tank: 96" x 34" x 28" (400g)
Sump: 56" x 26" x 18" (100g)
Fuge: 32" x 32" x 23" (100g)
Frag Tank (Still on development): 32" x 32" x 12" (50g)

Total system: 650g

Equipment:

Lightning:
6 Aquaillumination Super Blue Sol modules for Main DT
1 LED fixture with 6,500k Lights

Mechanical Filtration:
100 Micron Socks at sump
Reactor, Vertex UF-20 Reactor with Carbon
Skimmer, Super Reef Octopus XP-5000 External

Natural Filtration:
Chaetomorpha in Fuge
Live Rock (Over 200 Pounds)
Live Sand (Over 200 Pounds)

Water Mixing Station:
Vertex Puratek 96 GPD with booster pump
65 Gallon RO/DI Container
65 Gallon Saltmix Container
Both of these inter-connected for water moving and mixing.

Controller:
Neptune Systems Apex
3 EB8 Bars (24 connections)
1 WXM for controlling Ecotech pumps
1 VDM for controlling AI modules
1 PM1 for PH probe over Calcium Reactor
2 PH Probes - 1 Temp - 1 ORP
1 Cisco Live CAM for Live Tank View

Pumps:
Water Blaster HY-16,000, feeding the Skimmer, Fuge and Display Tank.
Pan-World 100PX-X for Water mixing.
2 Ecotech MP-60's
1 Koralia EVO 1,050 in Fuge for Oxygenation

Others:
GEO 818 Calcium Reactor (In the middle of setting it up)

Here are some renders of how the new Tank is displayed on the
new house.

I decided to place the tank within the backyard Pergola, as stated before, I had to reduce the FishRoom size due to lack of space and to avoid taking too much of the garden.

View of the garden as it was before:

And with the new Pergola and Fishroom in place:

And there is enough for now with just six modules:

I had a Kole Tang which got stressed (Don't know why) he got Ich and died, managed to get the Multicolor out and he is in the QT Hospital for one month now, he is doing great, the seven chromis and Clarkiis are still in the DT and doing great, I had no problem with them getting white spots, so, intention is to wait at least one more month so the parasite can starve and hopefully clear, with this, I can bring the Multicolor back.

Also, I had a Reef Gold Dart as a Return pump, it failed and don't really know why, bought it used so I think this is where the problem began, I changed it for the Water Blaster HY-16000, this thing is a beast, my friend Jim (Gimmito) recommended it and no complains so far, I am feeding the Fuge, Skimmer and Dt also building a manifold to feed three reactors and no problem whatsoever, here some pics of the new pump in place:

That's one heck of an update Juan !

LMK how your drains are working out. I'm going to be working on my manifold also, that pump is a beast !

p.s.

You are the only guy I know who had his tank dropped in by crane. :D

jpsika08
08/09/2011, 04:47 PM
Thanks Jim!

I have only one problem with the drains, I should install a Gate Valve instead of a ball valve, the first one is much more precise so I can really make small increments on the return and drain durso for better adjusting.

LOL about the crane, it was a hassle but fun to watch, I almost ran out of battery while taking the video, but luckily it lasted till the end.

Thanks for the info on the pump resonance and noise, mine will complete week 2 this Upcoming Saturday and I think the sound is beginning to lower.

How are your drains holding with the pump?

Very nice build. What are the plans for stocking the tank?

jpsika08
08/09/2011, 06:48 PM
Thanks Doe5ia14,
Basically plan to stock it with SPS in the coral area, with fish, well, still haven't quite decided, there isn't too much variety coming into my country so not much to choose from, maybe small fish so I can place more population of them, for example anthias or similar.

The Right section of the rockscape is intended of LPS or sofities, (Mostly softies) Zoas, mushrooms.

As for now, I'm still waiting for some sign of Coraline Algae to give me the heads up and introduce a couple of SPS frags, I have seen one little tiny bitty spot of it but not enough to take the plunge, still balancing my Ca, Alk and Mg so I can fire up the calcium reactor and Mg Doser :)

The heavy duty schedule 80 ballvalves seem to be fine dialing in what I need. Although, I have the left overflows draining much faster than the right side for some reason. I have to play around with it.

What a great idea, an outdoor tank it looks really great. How do you keep the temperature down in the summer months?
It is a really nice project you have going, I''m looking forward to seeing what you will put in next

jpsika08
08/10/2011, 01:38 PM
Thanks 8220, :)

In my country we just had summer time and now entering rainy season, good thing about here is that temperature doesn't pass up the 85 degrees and 65 degrees, it's really stable, with this I just use the four fans and open or close the fishroom door and window, that's it, as of the moment I haven't needed the heaters or chiller to correct temperature and the tank remains at 78F - 79F, it's what I like to call Nature's own way of dealing with my tank LOL

As I had an Ich outbreak, lost one fish and other is under treatment at the LFS, I'm still not confident that the ones that are still within the DT are ok, or at least I know that the Ich is still there waiting for new victims to arrive, so have to make the tank fishless for at least 8 weeks and cut the Ich cycle.

I bought some tanks yesterday, still need to get another three 25 gals,

Here are the pics.

25 Gals:

50 Gal:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/2011-08-12084201.jpg

And 20 Gal:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/2011-08-12084207.jpg

Also, today I'm removing the shelf and bench I had as I bought a new bigger shelf used in spare parts, it's 2 meters wide, 60 cm depth by 1.90mts tall, with this I will house all the QT's, products, workbench and much more in a more sturdier manner.

I will take pics of it when installed :)

jpsika08
08/12/2011, 06:05 PM
Thanks RPJaws, I order everything from the US to a PO Box I got in Miami, FL, the freight cargo company has good tariffs as we import a lot from there, taxes are not as high as expected for some products.

Also, as I get free shipping over orders $ 175 in most online stores, the price I get placed on the PO Box is good.

At the end I tend to pay 10% more plus local Tax which is 12% placed at my fishroom :)

jpsika08
08/15/2011, 12:12 PM
Thanks Othercents, the tank is holding great as of today, (Almost three months) no issues with temperature, even I made some foams in case the weather gets too cold,

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/64647810.jpg

It helps avoid cold weather get transferred to the DT through the glass, my temp keeps always between 78F - 79F, also I think my country's weather helps a lot as we don't have Tough summers (It doesn't go beyond 90F) and we don't have too much cold, it doesn't even snow here (Temps doesn't go below 65F).

Thanks for visiting.

Some weekend updates with the tank,

1. I removed the Shelf and Workbench, placed a bigger Shelf and now I can hold 5, 25 Gal QT's as well as the 50 Gal, I will take pics of it tomorrow once it's all done.
2. I had a design problem with the sump, the first baffle was too high and it was causing microubbles in the return chamber, second, my water level was too high and in case of a power outage the sump wouldn't hold all the water from the system, so I tried removing the silicon from both sides of this baffle to be able to remove it, no luck, it was very well glued, so next step, I took a hammer..... yes I broke the baffle under water, after one hour of working on removing all pieces attached to the glass, ten cuts on my hand and removing all pieces within the sump I finally have it clear, water is now running lower and no microbubbles in the DT, even just using two baffles.
3. Thoroughly cleaned the Sump, wow it was full of waste, I scrubbed and removed water.
4. Made major water change now using KENT SALTS, tested the batch and nice parameters.
5. Connected my Calcium Reactor, haven't fired up the CO2 as I'm just looking at the effluent drop ML's to calibrate it, I will do this and leave it 24 hours just to be sure the same drip rate hold for that time.
6. Re arranged all sump wiring and outlets connections, happy with the results.

Well, I think lots was done in three days and today hasn't ended LOL.

Pics tomorrow.

Great build. I really enjoyed watching all the videos. You must have some really nice friends considering how heavy that tank must have been :). I'm sure the crane made a huge difference. I am anxious to see what you think of the RO skimmer. I am thinking of getting one for my 240g soon.

Thanks Dave, better than friends they are my employees LOL, they are nice people wanting to do their best for a job well done :)

I love my SRO Octopus, would definitely recommend one, good quality parts, easy setup and they do a great job, also, the price ain't too expensive compared to similar products.

I maybe go with a bigger version (XP-8000 Ext) but always within the same brand.

jpsika08
08/15/2011, 08:35 PM
The Calcium Reactor is up and running with the CO2, the effluent is at a drip rate of 50ML's per minute and the CO2 Bubble count is 1 bubble per three seconds. The initial Parameters for the Tank are 9.4DKH and CA is at 400ppm, good thing is that the CA Reactor will increase both of these equally.

I left the CO2 work at this rate right now, will test again after 24 hours of dripping and correct from there.

I recently went through an ich outbreak in my system. Fortunately I do not have any corals yet, so I took the system to hyposalinity levels. I took a 75 gallon offline and moved 150-200lbs of live rock into it. It sat fallow for 3 months. Right now my system appears ich free. I'm getting ready for another hypo treatment in my QT tank, since it appears I have an angel showing signs of ich.

Haffs, just posted over your thread, impressive build congrats.
I will go the same route but with Seachem Cupramine, for my EEL I will go with Hypo treatment, I will leave the tank fallow for no less than 8 weeks so hopefully the parasite cycle will be terminated during that period.

Thanks for stopping by.

Here the latest update (With Pictures):

Fishroom:
As mentioned before, I modified a little my fishroom as I needed more space for storage, better arrangement and most important to place QT tanks so I can bring more amount of fish for filling the DT quicker:

This is a quick view of how the wall looks now, bigger and sturdy shelf basically cover it (Really considering painting it all white so it can match with the whole room):

BEFORE:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/P1030518.jpg

and NOW:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6200.jpg

I can hold on this rack 5 to 6, 25 Gallon tanks:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6203.jpg

And on this one the 50 Gal QT Tank in case I bring in bigger fish:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6204.jpg

The water depot fitted perfectly underneath:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6205.jpg

This the Top shelf where I got plastic boxes to sort out everything better (Test kits, supplements, spares, etc):
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6208.jpg

Below the QT line I got my work bench, when I seat on my stool I'm in perfect height and space to work doing water testing or whatever I need to do here:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6206.jpg

And the lowest line is to place bulk things, as salt or bigger boxes to hold other stuff, even underneath this line I got my ladder which I use to go into the tank for maintenance:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6207.jpg

Installed the fan on the ceiling which is blowing air onto the AI lights, as I have them mounted to close to the ceiling one of them was turning off due to heat and lack of ventilation, now the problem is corrected:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6209.jpg

jpsika08
08/20/2011, 01:51 PM
And a full shot of the fishroom, yes, the moving space within here is reduced, I got 1mts between tank and shelf but hey, who needs moving space instead of more tanks?! :)
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6210.jpg

Just pending over the QT tanks a rail which I will use to slide LED lights over each QT, in case I need to remove or add fish even acclimate without light I will just slide it off.

Also, Will install a light on my working line so I can see what I'm doing without turning the fishroom's lights and stress the fish during night.

Here is finally my manifold pictures, as of today I installed my Carbon Reactor and working great.

Here is the final product once assembled and glued, it can manage up to three reactors:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/2011-08-18185123.jpg

Here is the new toys,

I Bought one Acclimate XL / Fish Trap box, but Premium sent two, now I need to check my billing statement, at least I know I can sell one locally.

2,000 ML's of Vertex Pro Bio Pellets:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6213.jpg

And the two new Vertex UF-20 Reactors to hold these pellets:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6214.jpg

unboxing one of the reactors, as always Vertex is top notch quality, even packaging is great:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6221.jpg

For my reactors I modified the in/out connections, I take them from 1/2" to 1" as this is the size of the manifold outputs:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6223.jpg

The end result:

Input:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6227.jpg

Output:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6228.jpg

And the finished product:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6226.jpg

I modified the way the manufacturer suggest placing the inner strainer and sponges, last time I had my reactor filled in with these pellets, somehow the lower sponge got loose and pushed all of these on to the top, making them go bad, so now I lowered the strainer to the bottom and below this, the sponge, now the pellets won't suffer the same fate, on top I will place the other sponge which will stay there due to water flow:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6230.jpg

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6231.jpg

Filled the chamber with RO/DI water as it needs to stay like that 24 hours prior of using them in the tank:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6236.jpg

And here both reactors ready to be connected tomorrow:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6237.jpg

What I find strange was that the two 500 ML's bags they sent, (Right Reactor) the media is really small, but in the 1,000 ML bag (Left Reactor) the media is larger, at the end both covered the same space:

Looks good Juan !

I think you can open a fish store called of course "The Fish Whisperer." :D

Are you using Aqua Clears on all the QT tanks ? I just redid mine by taking out the live rock/sand in the small return section in my sump. I'll replace it with. Hydro sponge per Lee Birches recommendation. PetSolutions has a sale going on and I stocked my fish medicine cabinet also. I want to get everything ready for those black ice clowns. ;)

Yes, I'm planning on using the Aqua 20 on all 25's and I already have Aqua 70 on the 50, at the end is just for water filtering and movement.

Can you please send me the list of medications you bought?, I want to do the same, thanks in advance.

I will look into sales at their site.

BTW, I was looking at the Hydro Sponges, they look nice and much easier to clean than the sand IMHO. :)

You can try 2 on the left panel where the sps will be. One in the back middle. And one on the right side panel where the softies will be. You'll be able to meet flow requirements of the species that way.

Thank you BillyC :), here are two more options based on recommendations:

Haffs09

#3 looks good to me. Keeping the MP60s on the tank ends will allow you to ramp them 100% and the whole tank will benefit. I think if you position one on the back of the aquarium, you'll likely end up throttling it down.

jpsika08
08/24/2011, 10:46 PM
Well, option 3 is now established, now I need to define the best modes and programming of each pump throughout the day.

The backwall pump was placed directly hitting the second column of the tank so lots of flow is been scattered around it, intention here is when having SPS that these receive flow underneath them to remove debris or bubbles and of course to keep pushing trace elements and food into them.

Any suggestions for the modes, programming more than welcome.

Thanks for the other medicine recommendations, I will look into them today.

I'm beginning to quit on idea of removing the actual fish, one month, no spots and they are even getting much bigger, I tried the Acclimate trap without success, I think the fish must be laughing at me every time they see me come up with a new idea for catching them LOL.

Today I bought all the new fish that will go into the QT tanks,

This is the list of them,
6 Tiger Queen Anthias
1 Triggerfish Blue Throat
1 Dwarf Flame Angel
1 Starry Blenny
1 Red Stripe Dwarf Angel Fish

The anthias will go all into the 50 Gal QT Tank
The Triggerfish Blue throat will got into one 20 gal alone
The Dwarf Flame Angel and Starry Blenny will go into one 20 Gal together
The Red Stripe Dwarf Angel Fish will go into 20 gal QT alone

And here is a video of the Trigger Fish which came home with me today.

Tanks in order in the video.
1. First tank, Tiger Queen Anthias
2. Two Barred Rabbitfish
3. Blue Throat Triggerfish
4. Flame Dwarf Angel and Starry Blenny
5. Red Stripe Dwarf Angel

Also, made some acrylic hoods for the small 4 tanks and installed lights over them too so fish can actually see food when given.

Jim, thank you very much :)

I'm doing weekly water changes, I was thinking of 10% but maybe I will increase them up to 30%, I'm running my salinity at 1.022 but lowering it at 1.018 and I'm feeding twice a day (Don't know if it's too much but want to get them fat).

I'm planning for 4 week QT and into the DT.

With the Multicolor, LFS showed me their tank which they have six different types of Dwarf Angels together, even the system is smaller than mine, do you think this can be a problem?

Thanks

Bagz727, I'm using Hagen Elite filters with just sponges and carbon (As no medicine has been introduced to any QT's,).

In these small tanks, and with the intention of making fish fat and happy, the amount of feeding can be high (at least in my case) so problem can be a high level of Nitrates, also, if any trace of ammonia is present, the only way to lower these safely is doing water changes.

Great photos and graphics... I will be following your build :)

Thanks Endrju84, nice to have you on board :)

Well, sadly the Blue throat Triggerfish passed away in the QT, reason so far unknown.

Also, got an Ick outbreak within QT 1, 2, 4 and 5, it seems I have been using DT water to fill the food cup and with this feeding the fish in QT's, so based on this, I sold the Anthias in QT 5 (50 Gal) and will remove all fish from DT for treatment in this tank (QT 5).

Gonna use the draining method, just bought a 300g and have another 130g, once I lower the water, I can scoop out fish easily (Hopefully).

Hi Juan,

I think running hyposalinity is fine, it actually helps them not have to work as hard exchanging salt in their system.

I know it's hard, but I would do 6-8 weeks just to be sure.

I've seen multiple angels in small display at the LFS also, but you never know
When putting them in your display. It's always hit or miss.

I think doing a 10% daily or every other day would be better than a large 30% weekly water change...stability is the key. Especially if you are feeding twice a day. Believe it or not, I've heard Live Aquaria recommend multiple feedings especially for anthias.

jpsika08

Here is another project I will be starting in the next days, I will be developing my new frag tank which I plan to isolate from the main system, so I can "QT" corals and avoid any type of Cryptocrayon cyst sneak into the tank.

Here are some specs:
Tank dimensions: 48" x 24" x 12" (60gal).
Skimmer: Super Reef Octopus XS-1000 HOB, and Yes, it's the red edition, it can treat up to 120gals.

Lights: Maybe thinking of Tek T5 4 bulb 54W Lamp.

As I don't have lots of room within the FishRoom, I will design this tank to be an all-in-one, I will leave enough room so I can do maintenance easier.

The Wall between the FT and rear chamber is made out of glass with a red acrylic cover.

Here is a Perspective view:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/Render01-Ver1.jpg

The overflow for getting water into the rear chamber is on the far rear right upper corner.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/Render02-Ver1.jpg

Once water goes into the rear sump, a first set of baffles will remove any unwanted microbubbles which can affect the HOB skimmer.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/Render03-Ver01.jpg

After these baffles water goes to the skimmer and heaters bay even considering another PM1 module for the Apex to hold a Temp probe and PH Probe, after this, a small chamber with sand and Chaeto Macroalgae serving as fuge, last chamber is the return pump which will be a Mag 7 or Mag 9, at the height of return, I will get with the first one 700 GPH (14x Turnover) and with the second one I can get 900GPH (18x) turnover, will decide later on.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/Render04-Ver1.jpg
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/Render05-Ver1.jpg

A Flow accelerator goes from the rear chamber back to the main tank.
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/Render06-Ver1.jpg

For more flow, an MP10 will be placed on the right side:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/Render08-Ver1.jpg

And the Fuge will have three set of levels, first one 2" second one 4" and top one is 6" from bottom, I can decide position based on coral lightning requirements.
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/Render09-Ver1.jpg

The Light as stated above, will be (Not 100% sure) a Tek T5 4 bulb 54watt lamp, idea is to paint with red all body so it can match the tank.

And here is a quick 360 video of the tank for further details:

you are doing this aquarium as the major league reefers, you have one positive point that no one else do in our contry, everybody do the aquarium with out planification and thats the reason why the people here at last time doing anything to get back the aquarium (it happens to me :( ), but at least 5 acclimatation tanks, good skimmer, good filtration, good equipment, good medical treatments, good testers, you have everything to have on perfect parameters the aquarium, sorry but i have to do a question, there's something that you dont have it????... about the frag tank do you not think on LED lightning?
another point, where do you get that acro? looks great but will take time to regain its color. i have a hybrid Zoanthids colony (watermelon/Radioactive dragon eye) that it doesnt fit on my 15 gallon nano have more than 200 polyps, im sure that fits on yours LOL tell me if your interested, and the last question (Sorry) did you visit Ocean Farm, they have beautiful and exclusive corals...

Congrats for your proyect!!! :D

UPDATE on the Frag System light setup and plug displacement:

Lights
I discarded the T5 fixture, so I just bought another AI Super Sol module (Good timing on AI to reduce their price), this will be used for the Frag Tank, the way I'm going to place it is using a Sunlight Supply Rail Mount 3.5 6rpm motor, with this I will be able to distribute light to all frags with one unit only.

Here is the video on how the light system will work:
<object width="640" height="510"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ibpk3Ai_Zqs?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ibpk3Ai_Zqs?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="510" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Frags
Also, I just made some changes to the Frag tank design, now it will be 60" x 24" x 12", in the video there is a frag plug placement simulation, each of these has 1" diameter which is a little bigger than usual (I think), the total amount is 240 frags and I think if I place them a little tighter I can reach 540 frags.

Skimmer
Finally as the frag tank will have a rear chamber I bought from a fellow reefer here at RC a used Super Reef Octopus XP-1000 HOB unit which is rated for up to 120gals, I think it will work great.

Thank you Pedro and CarlitosReef, indeed it has been a challenge to plan and develop the system, I began my reefing experience since May 2010 (Not too long from now) but I have had the practice of reading reading reading and more reading through out all threads and learn from them, I have made lots of mistakes during this period, but at least, ones in which I have learned from.

Also, the computer has helped me a lot to plan step by step the whole system making it easier and cheaper in the long run.

Pedro, thanks for the offering, as of now I'm importing my corals and nothing local. :)

OMG Sorry Pablo, sometimes I type in too fast, :p

Having the Light Motor mount is cheaper as I will need only one AI module instead of getting two or three to distribute light over it.

I will go to Ocean Farm and see their corals, thanks for the advice.

Well, I think I'm not having the best of luck fish related, last night my Red Stripe Dwarf Angel in one QT began acting weird, when turned the light on, I saw heavy breathing and a cloudy eye, so I quickly moved to make a major water change to remove copper and introduce Carbon so any organic residue from the medicine would dissolved.

The fish even began swimming belly up without strength (Not a pretty sight if you do care for your pets), I thought he was going to die overnight and there wasn't much I could do at the moment.

In the morning he was still swimming and based on Lee's (Leebca) advice, I quickly introduced a double dose of Maracyn Two antibiotic as I think the problem was fungal related; as of now, the fish still swimming and as my wife states "A little more calmer and swimming a little better" I just really hope he can make it out of this. (He is one tough little dude, that I can say).

Because of this, I took the decision to re-think my whole QT and complete system maintenance strategy, I have lost control of my routine as I need to be on so much stuff at the same time.

Here is what will happen in the upcoming weeks.
1. All my fish have price tags now and are going to the LFS to be sold, I can't risk them due to my lack of my system control and amount of loopholes I got right now.

2. My QT system will be redesign in a way that keeping several of them at the same time will be easier to maintain and risk free for the fish.

3. Will establish a more professional routine for the whole system, I can't be doing stuff as they come up as the only result here will be failure.

4. Will concentrate also on establishing the Frag Tank, with this, I will work around corals for now, this means, water parameters, system stability, system maturity, etc.

5. Will re design partly the fishroom as what I have right now is not as practical as it could be, the space needs to thought out better in a way maintenance and control can be well-done.

Basically, these are some ideas, any comments or suggestions, more than welcome.

I wanted to share some of the growth I have been having with my corals, at least I think I'm doing well here :)

Here is some of my Polipos:
The first pick you can see the size (Right frag) of the zoas when I got them:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/07112011-Corals-1-1.jpg

And here is a picture from above, as you can see they are spreading quickly:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6305.jpg

Here is another (Which I don't have a reference), but the middle section of the rock there was nothing as well as some of the sides, I think it only came with 6 polyps, now it's beginning to extend, as it was on the sand it couldn't spread quickly, but now it's over the big rock so it can take a quicker growth:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6307.jpg

And my Montipora, which I got almost dead, even some pieces of it broke (This is the main shape difference between pics), but now you can see a second layer growing over and polyps extended:
Before:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/07182011-Montipora-1.jpg

And now:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/DSC_6309.jpg

It's not an amazing growth but at least is doing good and progressing.

Thanks for watching.

Here is my new design for the QT system, idea came from Jim's (Gimmito) own QT's (Thanks man).

Well, off to the concept:

Here are couple of perspective views of the whole system, as you can see, it will have a sump with a Skimmer and fully interconnected between each, problem with isolated tanks and even more, having multiple ones being ran at the same time, is that water quality can go bad really quickly, this obligates one to keep doing water changes constantly; these fish will need to be here for at least 4 to 6 weeks so water quality is essential.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render01.jpg
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render01b.jpg

So, water gets pulled on the top center drain:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render03.jpg

Here is the rear section of all tanks:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render04.jpg

Each drain has an independent valve in case I need to isolate the tank:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render05.jpg

Water goes down and a couple of 4" socks will filter any detritus from the water:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render06.jpg

As you can see, the first baffle has just a lower opening, which allows for any bubbles to be caught before going into the main skimmer chamber, after this, skimmer treats water, heaters, probes or anything needed to treat the tanks above is placed in this chamber also, then some baffles and return pump pushes water back:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render08.jpg

There will be a UV which forces 100% of water coming in from the sump to go through it:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render09.jpg

Then, each tank has a return pipe with ball valve valve so I can control amount of flow going in:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render10.jpg

Each end pipe from the return has a 45 degree elbow, what this will do is push water to the lower front of the tank, any detritus on the QT floor will be blown up and probably sucked away by the drain pipe, at least, any Ick cyst will have a difficult time adhering to the QT floor like this.
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/QT-Render12.jpg

I know having multiple tanks interconnected can bring other amounts of problems as inter tank disease transfer, but, as I can isolate each, I can treat every tank in a different manner.

Also, there will be a pre-QT routine which consists of a FW with Methylene Blue dip so they can drop any unwanted parasites and go into the QT "Clean".

Thanks for watching.

Great vision and great planning.
Your computer rendering is exceptional and so self explanatory.
Your tank is coming up very nicely and already had some happy corals.
Do keep updating so we all can learn more from you.
I'm also just starting to stock corals in my new build, so I'm sharing your excitement at this stage coz it's the most exciting part of the build, right :)
Your rendering of the vortech pump placement is just cool. How do you find the flow now? Any trouble of the sand being blown around ?
What settings are they in currently?

Sorry for asking so many questions :)
I am using korallia pumps for wavemakers in my tank at present.
I'm contemplating on getting a vortech MP10 or MP60 for my tank.
Which one will you suggest and could you recommend how I can place it my tank?
Currenly I can afford only one vortech pump :)
Hoping for your suggestions in my thread.
Thanks a lot and apologize for the big post

Thank you very much for your kind compliment, just visited your thread and wow, you got a beautiful system, congrats. :)

With my pumps, I'm still not too happy with positioning, basically the configuration shown on my position chart is the correct one but I need to see for example where in the back glass I need to place the MP40's and on the side the MP60's (Height and horizontal alignment), at the end, I think of course each tank is different based on the rockscape configuration and coral placement.

I do have some blown sand, this is why I need to place the MP40's at least 6 to 7 inches above sandbed to avoid this, I tried today moving one of these a little lower (4" above sandbed) and the result was a big sand hole beneath lol.

I'm really happy with these pumps, I think they are the best in the market, the ability to randomly control flows gives you a lot of advantage in coral husbandry.

I will post my pump recommendation in your thread.

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/2011-09-20185848.jpg

Still pending my CA Reactor which supposedly was shipped today and I got to get a PM1 Module with Temp and PH Probe too.

What I'm beginning to be out of is connections on my EB8's modules, I think I will need to get a 4rth one.

All my Ai's have stock optics, 70's on the outer led's and 40's on the inner ones.

The light spread for my rockscape is great, though, I will be adding another one in the near future so I can really cover the end sections of the tank where it is somewhat dark right now.

I have seen a full propagation of my zoas and SPS are doing great under these lights.

As of now, I'm preparing again my shelf structure which will hold the QT and FT, what I'm doing to it right now is

1. Adding support to the center section so wood doesn't bend and generate stress to the tanks.
2. Will paint all structure pure white so it matches the fishroom and looks cleaner.
3. Re shuffled the shelf arrangement so the QT's and FT will fit better.
4. I'm going to install Formica to the wooden boards so no humidity will penetrate into my tanks.

Here are some pics of the middle support adding, I will add more as soon as I keep advancing on the structure:

That's what you call versatility!!
Those shelves are coming up pretty nice.

Congrats on those new corals!!
About the white on the tips, it's not quite clear from the photo. But make sure there is no Alk swings and also about light acclimatization. Alk swings and also too bright light too soon can lead to SPS go white.

Everything seems gelling in... Keep it up and waiting for your updates :)

I got my CA Reactor hooked up and I've been measuring my Alk and Ca for over a month now, as of now, I got it at 9.5 DKH and CA at 400ppm, I have boosted CA Reactor's production to achieve 11 DKH and CA 450ppm, would this levels be good?

Thanks.

Tanks are okay. Although, I noticed the vortech wasn't on in the FT and I noticed a little rtn on some of the corals. SPS sure are sensitive little suckers.

:D can you frag ur welder and ship him to me when I'm gonna start a new build!! Ur skilled and skill is contagious :)

Hm the Ca level you are trying to achieve seems fine but about the Alk, imho since you are gonna add ZeoVit, it's recommended to keep it between 7-8 dkh.
Make sure the pH is monitered closely. Coz any rapid change in any parameter can make those SPS go kaput.:uhoh2:

Totally agree with him gimmito on "SPS are sensitive lil suckers" :D

Sorry about the SPS not doing very good, have you checked water params in the FT?

I will try to frag my welder but I think he might not like it too much LOL.

My PH has been around 8.20 - 8.29 since a month ago as my alk has been stable, I will try monitoring today and target the levels you mentioned above, I think I will have to manually dose the CA just to let the Alk lower a bit.

Hiya Juan,
Lol on fragging ur welder. Always a plus when you hav skilled people working for ya :)

Yea about the Alk gradually bring it down. Would be good to manually dose Ca and monitor Alk drop and once uv reached the target, maintain it at that stable level. Then you can set up ur Ca Reactor and/or Kalk Reactor and keep up with the demands of your SPS.
At present in my tank I'm manually dosing 2 part and keeping the levels stable. My pH ranges between 8.1-8.2, Alk at 7.7 dkh, Ca at 450ppm in my last testing. But as I'm adding more corals the demands gonna increase, so il have to test and adjust my dosing as required. I do have a plan to install a Kalk Reactor in future.
The key is making any adjustments in parameters as gradual as possible, with water changes and diligent use of additives. IMHO since you will be dosing Zeo its better to get the parameters to the Zeo requirements and start with the dosing so you can reap maximum benefits :)

Happy Reefing!!

You can low to Calcium reactor, I thought the same when I had a KH 12 and Ca 420 in my sps aquarium, I lowed it flow and Kh got estabilized in 8.1 and Ca in 440 without need adding extra calcium.

In wich values are your NO3 and PO4 ? Is very important for your sps.

jpsika08
09/26/2011, 08:36 PM
Thanks Nup! will lower it as slow as possible, don't want huge swings to alter the SPS :)

Luis, thanks for the info, as of now NO3 and PO4 are at 0, this is because I got Vertex Bio Pellets running in two fluidized reactors 24/7, also, I'm running another reactor with Activated carbon and both of these are complementing each other to maintain this parameters at 0.

Thanks for watching and nice seeing another countryman around.

The main structure is painted, I will let it dry a couple of days so all fumes are gone before placing it back in the fishroom.

Now I need to cover the wood boards with Formica and the shelf is ready to receive QT and FT setups.

what trade of test did you use ? Some tests do not report low levels.

If NO3 and PO4 is zero, you will have to add aminoacids and other nutrients for corals health.

Nitrate 0
Phosphates 0.03ppm
Alk 10 dKh
Ca 410 ppm
Mg 1320 ppm

You just reminded me I need to test my tanks. lol.

I think sg needed to be brought up a bit, but otherwise everything looks pretty good. I did water changes before the tank tour and the bio pellets didn't start up for some reason. I think I might leave it off line for now...just getting tired of cloudy water.

Hey Juan,
The salinity needs to be upped a lil.
IMHO Ca too needs to be upped since ur gonna add more SPS. It will also help the coralline build up too ;)
And Alk too, it's is lesser than uv checked last time, right? So it's gradually coming down from 11. That's cool.

Rest are all el perfecto :)
Preferably adjust these settings and then go coral shopping and fill up ur beautiful tank :)

Happy Reefing!!

Yes, Alk is getting a little lower, I increased the PH Range within the CA Reactor, as it ain't fulfilling the daily demand it will begin to decrease slowly.

I bought today some Calcium buffer and will increase it slowly, I will target 430 to 440ppm, is this good?

Thanks.

My Eel was taken care by my LFS, but I think he was not too happy in there and had more than three weeks which he was not eating.
Today I brought him back to his home which is my fuge.

Here is a quick video when it was acclimating in the Acclimate device.
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3f_y8x3E-b4?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3f_y8x3E-b4?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

ADVICE TO ANY USERS USING THE ACCLIMATE WITH EELS... DO NOT USE IT LMAO!!
I left Nigel within here for acclimating, I left the fishroom to upload the video and post it here and suddenly the housekeeper began yelling that Nigel moved the top and climbed out, he was lying besides the fuge basically dying.
Well, as she really cares for Nigel (Housekeeper), she quickly took a bag, placed it as a glove, grabbed him and into the Fuge! no damage to him LOL.

Also, took out a raw shrimp, used Kent Garlic Guard to entice him to eat, he came out quickly and with one bite, bye bye shrimp, finally he ate with me today.

Hmm just thought of a name NigEEL the eel :D
Nice looking fish that one. But wont it hunt the smaller fishes and shrimps if ya keep in ya reef? Or ya planning on adding only big guys in your tank? :)
Glad it's feeding well and maybe "shrimps in garlic sause" maybe his favourite dish :D hmm must be an oriental eel
I once saw a leopard eel ruling alone in a big in wall tank, it was just a gorgeous sight. One day I wanna replicate something like that. But first I need a WALL that big :D

Congrats on getting parameters to the optimum. You have dextrous hands, coz its not easy task and these parameters can go hay wire when u try to adjust them. You are skilled at this :)

That's cool Juan
Clams are a good addition to a reef they are bit beneficial in nitrate control too. And your clam looks healthy with the mantles already poppin out. :)
NigEEL looks very cool on that video and it's heartwarming to see ya nurse him back to tip top health. His cave looks awesome. His natural habitat perfectly recreated. You can dip the shrimp in Selcon or Boyd vitachem both vitamin enriched mediums and feed him. It will help him build his health super quick.

Thanks Pablo, you're right, I too think it's an Acro, also, somebody told me it could be a Millie?, crossing my fingers it will color up soon :)

I bought today all tubing and PVC parts for the QT and FT, the FT is still under construction, hopefully tomorrow I will buy the glass for it and a local builder will assemble it.

The QT I have everything in the list ready for just plumbing and firing it on, I hope this happens next week.

These parts are:

Return Pump

Just need the light which I will buy some 48" LED tubes at the hardware store.

Well, this is going to be the future project (Once QT and FT are done and working)

I'm going to modify my Pergola Area where the main tank is right now.

As you can see, I did add the Right Tank which is Nigel's home, though, adding that one alone would look asymmetrical, so to correct this, I'm going to add another tank on the left side, it will be less wide but it looks better this way.

The tank on the Right will hold maybe Sea Horses, and has 100 Gallons, the Middle one of course, 400 gallons and the Right one where Nigel resides (And maybe a couple of other predators) will have 140, this will make a "Display" of 640 gallons, :p

On to the renders:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/MODIFY-A.jpg
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/MODIFY-b.jpg
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/MODIFY-E.jpg

And Render within the Fishroom:

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/MODIFY-D.jpg

I'm going to remove all the wooden frame, having these tanks on the side will not make it look good to have one big frame, also, thinking of doing this way to re do the Pergola and leave it a little more Minimalistic modern design, any suggestions more than welcome.

Thanks for watching.

As of the fishes, well I had an Ich break a while ago, and there is one last fish I haven't being able to catch which is a Diamond Goby, until I get this fish out I can't start my 8-week fallow tank :(

So, still got a long road ahead of me for introducing fish.

What I will do is, I will use the water from water changes going out of the DT to fill in the QT system, I will introduce a couple of fish and if they present Ich, well, I will be pretty sure my water has the crypto around, I got a full medicine cabinet in case they get the disease so no harm done to the fish.

Quick update, I have been wanting to change my Sump as it's too small for the whole system, also, it's a little unpractical because of the speed of the flow within it (Way to fast for the actual design) and I'm having lots of microbubbles in the tank.

Other problem I'm running here is when turning off the main pump, it leaves me with less than half inch of water from the edge of the sump until I have a major flood. The actual sump can handle up to 100 gallons, it usually keeps maybe 70 gallons of water.

Finally today I began my new sump, I'm using my former 275 gallon tank (72" x 34" x 26"), It fits swiftly under the main tank, tomorrow the Glass company will cut the glass sheets.

Great thing about it is that it can actually hold 275 gallons of water but it will run somewhat 175 gallons, so I got lots of margin for water overflow, and also it will run at very high speed

With this, my actual tank volume will go from 600 to 775 gallons

Renders:

Measures:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/NewSump-Version2-H.jpg

Detailed:

Perspective view of the Sump:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/NewSump-Version2-A.jpg
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/NewSump-Version2-G.jpg

In the first chamber, water will fall freely without any socks, all water from fuge, reactors and DT will fall in here.
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/NewSump-Version2-B.jpg

As water will raise, microbubbles will dissipate on top and will overflow to the 4, 7" socks which will catch any detritus on the water column:

Also, in case the socks are clogged, there is a small glass (2 inches high) than can allow overflow to the main sump area in case it's needed.
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/NewSump-Version2-C.jpg

Underneath the socks area, there is a 2" clearance so water can go underneath to the main sump area.
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/NewSump-Version2-D.jpg

The main sump area has 31 x 33" space, my SRO XP-5000 External skimmer will be in there now, so instead of running external I will go internal, this will save me space in the fishroom.

After water is treated, a set of 4 baffles with 2" separation from each will remove microbubbles and into the return chamber where water goes back to the DT:

Great news on the additional size of the sump Juan !

Are you utilizing the return pump for more flow through the display ? A lot of people have a slow flow through the sump and utilize powerheads for movement within the tank.

Jim,
Thanks :)

Problem I'm having is that the Vortech can't be pointed to some specific points in the tank where I need some flow as lots of nutrients are accumulating and Cyano is coming out.

I will use 4 Penductors to point toward these places and need the main pump to really push some water.

I like a little more speed in the sump as I got the theory that the quicker the water passes through it, the more quicker it can be treated, for example, heating the water, dosing or skimming.

Interesting theory my friend. :D

You can always try Tunze powerheads which can be directed (one of the reasons I went with them).

Yes, I thought so about the Tunzes, the only thing I don't like is the cables within the tank, though, if the Penductors are not enough, then, Tunzes it is :D

Yes, that's all the glass for the new Sump baffles and the FRAG TANK.
Also, made a little modification to the Frag Tank, new dimensions will be 65" x 24" x 13", 85 gallons of pure joy :woohoo:

Glass builder is scheduled for Saturday 3Pm at my house, more pics soon to come. :)

Hiya Juan,
That's a great sump design. Simple and effective.
For sure it will kill all air bubbles and it's great that you have added more volume.
Thanks for those renders really self explanatory.
Hmm sorry about the ick breakout.
I'm sure once your QT gets up n running this won't be an issue at all.
I love your planning and really looking forward to see it bring realized.
Waiting ever so eagerly to see the coming updates...
:D
Happy Reefing!!

Hi Juan
Yes cables can be unsightly in the beginning. But if ya plan their placement then the coral growth will hide em well. Patience is the key :D
About the penductors, again now it can be aimed at the spots where you want, but keep in mind coral placements and coral growth. Then you might need to reconsider the flow patterns. So flexibility of the wave making/flow set up is an important factor.
I know you will be knowing this already coz you are a great planner.
But I just wanted to put it out here :)
Just my humble opinion.

Hope your glass maker rushes to ur home and finishes the work ASAP :D
Good luck buddy!!

This is the To-Do List for the tank:
1. Remove some excess of silicone the glass builder left in the tank.
2. Red Acrylic which is been delivered next Friday (Hopefully).
3. Also, need the levels (<- Name?) for frag placement.
4. Hole for placing the Uniseal for return tube
5. Light Rail install
6. Light install

As the tank is ready, all of the above will be done this week.

Nice perspective view of the frag tank and of the man behind all this amazing build :D
Very nice design for the frag tank, with the filtration tucked behind nicely it will make a beautiful display.
Just wondering, the back panel, did ya think of painting it black? So as to prevent nuisance algae growing in the panel, and the overflows, baffles etc. Saves a lot of time from cleaning em. :)
Great to see it up on the shelf Juan!! Did ya do a leak test?

Please add this to the to-do list:
Fill everything up with water :D
Can't wait to see it running :D

What light are ya gonna use for the frag tank?

I'm not sure about this area and how the overflow piece of glass is spliced in. You might need to brace that to keep it from being blown in from the pressure. It will probably be fine, but it will be one area to watch.

Thank Nup!, check out what I had planned to cover the back area

And here it is, the Ferrari Red, almost done tank :D

Bought a big 8' by 4' feet red acrylic sheet:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/814cfe58.jpg

Cut it on measure and instead of teeth, I decided to open 5 inch holes instead, it's a different overflow approach :):

http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/6c96d940.jpg

And here in position, haven't glued it yet, need to cut first the return hole on both, the glass and acrylic, also, it still has the transparent protection:
http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx346/jpsika08/375%20Gal%20System/75b590ab.jpg

Othercents, thanks for pointing that out, as it's only a 13" height tank there ain't too much pressure, also glass is 10mm so it's thick enough to sustain, the small overflow glass is attached on both sides and the bottom one, and as you can see, I'm installing the red acrylic pane here so the force to this whole glass will get better distribution. :)

Yesss now it's perfect!! Looks neat and matching with the skimmer :)
Be very vigilant when drilling holes on the glass. How come ya dint drill it before ya assembled the tank? Any reason for that?

The red acrylic just looks great and really compliments the overall look. Nice Ferrari themed fish room :D

This guy was caught on the Atlantic the day he came, as they are pests and usually end up as dinner, I thought of keeping him instead of going under the knife.

The hanging kit mod is looking really professional and really compliments the sleek look of the AI.
The light rail system is just too cool very good idea.
