hi All,
looking at the newer controllable tunze power heads VS vortech mp40 .
both are top dollar pricing ... with lots of features ...so trying to decide on which one. i do not really want to end up with maint prone power head.
this is sort of general design question ..
it seems like the vortech wet and dry design , by design is more complicated and more chances for problems.
looking at the number of maint post it seems like vortch does have alot of maint problems. (seems like it )
but ?? is this really true ??
does vortech have MANY more pumps out there so sure your going to see more maint problems post on reef central ? than say tunze controllable pumps...
or the high tech design of vortech with the wet/dry units really tend to have more issues , reguardless of how well made ??
anyone with expierance with both ,,, have any feed back ?
thanks

Here, you may find this article intersting. Compares the advertised flow rates between Tunze and Vortech, among other powerheads, with their corresponding true flow rates. Interesting how the others were fairly close, except for Tunze. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2011/7/aafeature

Hey , i was really more trying to address maint problems ...
for my average power head needs i think both would work fine ...
just seeing if vortech needs more maint , typically ,,, or they break down about the same ?
ok, thanks again

have not had any Issues with neither ...
they both have great customer service as well.
in fact, I have never seen or heard of a MP40, OR a tunze pump "breaking down"

well , i guess i have been following the vortech vendor forum ..
seems like alot of post about noise , shaft problems ect ,,, maybe 6 months down the road ... on the post ... vortech is quick to fix ...
but again if they have 1000s pumps out there then 20 or so post would be small number of problems if everyone post.

In my case, it depends on my wife. No cords on the outside, dead silence necessary. So for me Tunze is my only option.

well ... I am not too sure as of what you are asking !
does Vortech MP40 make noise ? YES IT DOES, and it gets louder when it is on wave.
WHY ? cause the motor/dry side, is outside the water. which tunze's motor is inside the water, and therefore noise blocked/filtered by water.
how LOUD is the noise ? not too loud ... I can not hear it over my TV ... but if I turn off everything in the house and sit beside it, it sounds like an elephant crying lol
the older generation had some shaft Issues I believe, but the new generation sold now doesnt.
also, the threads you see, are not always PROBLEMS, or pump breaking down, I personally posted there 2 times ! 1. I didnt read the manual fuilly ! they pointed it out
second time, I dripped water on my controller, and burned it ! and they gave me a new one free of charge !
both my fault.

The nice thing about both the pumps is that the resale value is really high. I purchased both and just resold the one that I was not as impressed with.

Its not really an issue.
One nice feature about vortechs vs tunze is the pump is completely rebuild-able.
If you are worried about problems you can put together a small rebuild pack and save it for a rainy day. I have a shaft, bearing, and backplate in my fish drawer. I got them over a year ago and have 5 mp40w running. Have not had to use them yet but it was worth every penny.
