The zoanthids are like "Um..."

Up we go

It was cute,
UNTIL the zoas got dragged around on top of other corals and got stung.
So I decided to putty the couple of frags that i had on the sand on a frag disk and stick onto the rocks.http://youtu.be/M_ZWf9d2ukw

My son has an urchin that came with a full hat of multi colored zoanthids -- the thing looks like Carmen Miranda.

You should try rock boring urchin, small spiny cousins to the large spiny ones. Not sure if they really bore rock and mine stay on the glass, but, when they do go to the rock, you find boulders on TOP of the corals! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr................

Doesn't your urchin know it's rude to wear a hat indoors?

Obviously your tuxedo urchin has something in common with mine...

Basically I've learned to epoxy/glue all frags. Otherwise the two urchins I have will use them like a decorator crab.

They have tube feet, that they use to feel their way around, and also use them to climb with and to pick up pieces of "camouflage" aka coral frags, hermits crabs, snails, thermometers, algae clips you name it. If its in the path of the urchin and its light enough for him to pick it up they will. I have found that mine takes similar paths around my tank so I have found that as long as I keep my frags out of his "normal" path he sticks to the thermometer and the algae clip.

My LFS had an urchin that had a suction cup on the very top of him. It looked like an asian sedge hat. (I think that's what they are called) It was so funny!

Well, I knew they had those wavy tentacle things on the front of them but I didnt think they had them on top of their head(?), nor did I think they were even really interested in picking things up. I thought they just somehow picked them up by accident. Also, with all them spines, I didnt think they needed protection. Maybe they are really witches!? :hmm1:

Okay, a urchin with a green wig on would be just down right freakish, lol.

Hi csmfish, yes, i've learned that urchins put stuff on their head to protect them from predators (large wrasses and other large fish love to eat them), and also to protect from stuff falling on them because as they clean they can bulldoze some rock if the rock isn't secure. Mine had an injury from some luve rock falling on him at the lfs, poor guy, but he's all healed up now :)
Here's a video of what he looks like now http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/lush-a-lot/1eb3dbef.mp4
