I can't tell you which is the best, but, I can tell you which is not worth the money!!

Hagen Nutramatic 2X...most of the time the food drum just doesn't turn completely...but, sometimes it does...never know if it really fed the fish or not...so you have to feed them by hand any way...just in case!

I won't say it's the best, as I haven't extensively tested all other options, but I love my Eheim feeder it's worked flawlessly thus far.

I've used the rectangular Eheim and the current aqua chef. Both worked great for me.

Are there any that will crush up the pellets any? I bought one of the super feeders to use with pellets, but the 1mm pellets were too small (as I bet would be the 2mm), and the 3mm pellets are too big for my fish. I had thought that the device would crush to an extent but it does not.

Should I just switch over to flakes? Or do any other auto-feeders, like the Eheim, crush pellets as well?

no feeders crush the pellets, YOU could crush the pellets before putting them in though. The ehiem will feed anything from 1mm to 10mm depending on where you set the opening.

Ya, maybe I just got the wrong auto-feeder. The Super-Feeder is nice, but anything under 2mm falls through the cracks. Maybe I will call the manufacturer and see if there is a 'fix' for that. I really only have this to dump in spirulina and a small amount of protein pellets... no reason I couldn't just switch to flakes for the occassional very small feeding.

Best can depend on intended use, but I use the Eheim dual chamber model. Daily driver been doing it's job for well over two years. There's at least one other Eheim model but I have no experience with that one.

I fashioned a custom bracket for mine to hang it from the rim of the display. Added a little ramp to tilt it since I found this aided in delivering larger flake food. Also provides extra clearance from my T5HO light. Other end of the bracket extends into the water to allow dry food to soak a little & prevent it from floating away on the surface. The food transport mechanisms are a kind of screwjack like you see in some vending machines, you know, the ones where sometimes the chocolate bar doesn't quite get to the end and drop when the screw stops turning. I guess if it has a fault, that's it, very large flakes tend to roll around in the feeding chamber rather than get transported to the outlet. I used to fill one chamber with pellets, the second with a mixture of flakes & other types of grub. Now I simply fill both chambers with a mixture of everything.

Plenty of programming options for multiple feedings etc. Battery powered, but will retain your feeding settings after battery change. The only thing you need to reset is the time of day after battery change.
