I'm looking to upgrade skimmers soon and would like to know what skimmer would be great for a heavily stocked tank. I'm looking at the SWC and Bubble Magnus. I'd ideally like a Bubble King 250, but budget can't go that high. Any suggestions?

You should look at the sro xp5000... great skimmer for the price.

You could get a trigger systems skimmer it will work on your tank

Plus 1...I have a heavily stocked 240, I had an aqua C EV 240 for a couple years, when it became evident it was not enough skimmer, I switched to the Trigger Systems Titan Skimmer. It is a fantastic upgrade. Rated up to 450 gallons, very space efficient, and great price for what you get. Once dialed in, I haven't had to do anything other than clean the quickly filling with nasty sludge collection cup.....I have 0 complaints about this skimmer.

Yes and no. There was a 300a that was not a cone. I don't see it on either site anymore which sucks! because it was a nice skimmer.

swcskimmers.com is run by Elite Reef in Colorado. Great shop with an actual phone number in case you need to contact them. I would purchase the skimmer through them if you go that route.

The octopus sro-5000 or xp 5000 is also a great choice. I prefer the SWC askoll pump vs the bubble blaster of the octopus but you can't go wrong either way.

I would call elite and ask if they can still get the 300a (not the cone) if your on a budget. It was a sweet skimmer. Don't get the one with the sicce pumps. You want the askoll.

when i bought my 300 non cone from elite they had around 4 or 5 left. they also have the cone that comes with the askoll pump, the 300 that i have has the sicce pumps, they were really loud and after talking with elite reef they sent me two brand new complete sicce pumps that are super quite. either way you wont go wrong with the swc skimmers.

I read a few complaints that the trigger skimmer is very loud. So you have the same experience? Biggest compliant I have right now with my skimmer is that it is super loud with the sicce pump.

I know I for sure don't want another one with the sicce pump. Why do you say the bubble blaster isn't as good? I'm leaning toward one with the askoll pump as I have read nothing but good things. I went as far as watching a few in action on youtube and couldn't even hear them running. Plus the performance of the skimmate looks amazing.

I also have the 300 non cone with the askoll. I got mine from Luke over at Reef filtration. By far the best skimmer I have owned. Its on a system with about 450 gallons now.

The askoll is quieter and has a perfect track record. I am not sure if anything has changed but I don't think one has ever failed beyond repair. It is based on the Laguna pond pump which is also the same pump as a red dragon.

Because Geo is seriously over priced. You are right he does make some great stuff, but for the price of an SWC skimmer you cant go wrong. If the OP had some cash just laying around to blow then sure why not. But if you are going to do that, then why not just get a BK.
