Sand from the beach - yes or no?

Ok, I am enjoying a week at emerald Isle north carolina this week and have had plenty of beach time. Missing my tank at home but think it is in good hands :debi:

So, I have an upgrade ahead of me and i am wondering about beach sand, it is full crushed shells and such and I am wondering if it would be ok to take a few buckets home with me for the new tank. If so what precautions should I take or is it just not worth it?

You definitely don't want to take the sand directly from the beach itself or near the shore. Way too many pollutants. 20 feet deep or so should be fine.

+1. You can't be sure what you're getting. It's best to used clean sand for the hobby. Second hand sand will be even cheaper and just as safe. As far as i know, there haven't been any deep water oil spills in any hobbyist tanks recently.

+1, also in most places its also illegal.

my cousin use to leave close to beach when we both got in saltwater tanks, he took 1 cup of sand and put it in his tank, from about 10 feet out, and withing 3 days everything was dead. I would not add sand from the ocean or beach. its better to just buy sand and go from there. TBH it looks better
