i run a hurricone cat 3 which is very similar with the reeflo pump it has a 12' diameter to 8' neck on my 270 and love it... i have never seen so many bubbles and i used to run euro reefs and etc... hurricone i believe is very similar to reef octopus ... i love mine...
my only complaint is ... mine has the louder pump never the less its a wonderful skimmer

david00061, I have the XP5000 on my tank it that thing is a beast, the skimmer is cleaning up after three tangs, fifteen anthias, and a couple mid sized wrasses. Not to mention a bunch of happy SPS and LPS. The bubble blaster pump is pretty quiet for its size.

Tagging along on this one. Hopefully by X-mas, my system will be of similar volume. I was considering the Skimz SM302 Monzter E Series:

It's rated for similar size tanks as the SRO XP-8000, but draws 2000lph less air than the SRO. From an electrical consumption standpoint, the Skimz draws 100W less, and where I live ($0.10kWhr), that equates to about $90/year less in operating costs for the Skimz. If the Skimz and SRO can handle the same bio-load, it appears the Skimz is more efficient that the SRO. Any thoughts?

I should add that the above holds true if you gravity feed the Skimz vs. another feed pump.

Im using the xp5000ext on my lightly stocked 600g and it handles it easily. Im cleaning the cup once a week right now. I think the 8000 would be perfect for your tank.
