I am looking to get a skimmer for my 46 Gallon reef tank. The tank is 46 gallons plus a 25 gallon sump. I am thinking of a Reef Octopus 4" Pinwheel Skimmer. What would you recommend? I am looking to stay under $200 and have an insump skimmer. Thanks

I have a Reef Octopus 110 and its great. I ran it into a drain bucket and never have to touch it except for routine cleaning.

i had a reef octopus on my 125g. I loved it.. pulled up lots of junk. It did for me at least take a little while to figure out exactly how to set it to get the best results. However that's the same with every skimmer and searching for instructions on it and other peoples results on the forums helps a lot as well!

I'm a fan of the SWC skimmers. A SWC 120 cone skimmer would be perfect for your setup. They pull out some major gunk and the footprint is tiny.

I hate acronyms sometimes. What the heck is SWC?

SWC is the brand of the skimmer. I use a 160 and love it. But, I would recommend you do some research on them. I have heard that some of the pumps they use can give you trouble.

I was just being a smart *** and posting google results.

I've been in that position before, googling it results in quicker answers. Plus leads u to more knowledge.

Just to discuss quality and long term planning (not necessarily price) for a hot minute... I've had the same oversized EuroReef sit in sump skimmer running on my reef since 2001. So 10 years now and I upgraded tanks once during that time and kept the skimmer because I had purchased one rated for a roughly 200g tank when I had a 55g. I have had a 120g reef for something like 9 years now.

I only spent maybe $100 more at the time for the larger skimmer, but I've saved myself the cost of having to upgrade skimmers once already. I'm in progress of planning out a new larger cube ~200g and this skimmer is going to also work for the future tank I build too.

Overall, just saying maybe spending a little extra on quality/oversizing the skimmer for your current setup isn't a bad idea, because if you think of this product long term, you may still have it 10 years from now like I do, and we all know you'll probably be upgrading to more water volume during that time ;)
