100 #s of rock later - All the rock in the tank!

After seeing all the rock in the tank. I will definitely be investing in some egg crate for the bottom of the tank. I don't like the idea of all that weight on the bottom.

The pieces from BRS are HUGE! It looks like way more than 100#

Does anyone else think that is too much rock in the tank? Or does it just look crowded since I haven't aquascaped so that could have something to do with it.

I will be getting my heaters (2x150W) and 90lbs of the Reef Flakes soon. Order has already shipped!

Also, waiting on the HOB overflow from Jeff at Lifereef.

Sorry for the two posts. Would not let me add more than 10 images in a post.

I will update this as I get more bits and pieces!

Any feedback (good or bad) is much appreciated as this is my first tank and would like to do things the right way and learn where I can.

Thanks in Advance!

Tagging along :) That rock looks great from BRS. I'm in the middle of a 75 gallon build. Anyway you can take a detailed shot of the canopy. I'm about to venture into building one for my 75. Thanks

I will also be watching. Im at the end of my 75g upgrade build. I on the other hand will be using less than 70lbs of rock for more coral grow room and fish swim room.

I also had BRS rock, WASH IT!!! After i was advised to wash it, the ton of stuff that came out of it was staggering. You can also put rocks in the sump after you seed it with the bacteria. I would also add some live rock to get things going with the cycle and to seed the dead rock.

Drill that thing man. Check if the bottom is tempered, and if it is, drill the back. You will love th internal overflow box. You dont have to worry about leaks or overflows when the power goes out.

I just recently upgraded to a 75g, and the only reason i did was because of the built in overflow.

Chriskk:

Here is the canopy - Dont know what kind of detail you're looking for. If this doesn't do it let me know.

allsps40:

Yeah i definitely think I have too much rock. Maybe I will end up putting some in the sump as I currently have no plans for the sump other than the skimmer and return.

Saadatski:

I thought only the dry Pukani rock from BRS needed to get a wash before getting in the tank not the eco reef saver like i have, and that was only if you were adding it to an established tank already due to all the phosphates it would leech? Since I will be cycling the tank with it, I don't foresee any problems with not washing it. If I am mistaken, please let me know.

I plan on seeding the dry with live once I get to that stage. Just want to have all my equipment in :D

I played with the idea of drilling the tank but just couldnt do ot :o and the bottom is tempered (YAY for stickers!)

Already ordered the overflow from Jeff at Lifereef. Should ship tomorrow if I remember correctly.

what lighting are you using? unless the room the tanks in gets cold you shouldnt need 2 heaters. Looking good so far!

Chris: Going to be using Tek Elites 6x54. But now am torn between what Grim has said in terms of the AquaticLife 6x54 plus they have moon lights!

Tank is in the bedroom so it comfortable warm??

I picked up two heaters as a back up to the first one, as ive read many people do just in case one fails there is another. Should I just use one??? and return the other?

Should hopefully get the sump baffled in this weekend :) Still waiting on the overflow from lifereef to work on the plumbing!

Sump Design:

<img src="http://i.imgur.com/GWgL8.png" alt="" title="Hosted by imgur.com" />

Sorry for the shotty drawing. Just did a quick sketch in Paint.

As I have 100#s of rock I want to put as much in the sump as possible to free up some space once I get it to become LR.

How many #s can I fit in the current set up? its a 30g. Can I make the return chamber smaller to free up more space.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

what r ur plans for the ATO? if u will make the retrun section smaller, u will have much less water to evaporate, so ur water lvl in that chamber will be droppin fast, i would leave it as it is

Hey, sorry i didnt say this a while ago, but you really shouldve washed the dry rock. i also have the eco rock and i found nasty stuff in it lol...

As for the design, the last baffle on the right should be a bit shorter so that water doesnt just flow through the top and never touch the bottom of the fuge. I did that mistake and its annoying.

IF you are willing to spend all this money, why would you skip on the most important part, lighting. Definitively get LED lights, would be a huge waste of money if you didn't.

If based on the picture with the HD bucket, no plans for ATO, it was just there, but I guess if I can fit a 5 gallon bucket underneath why the hell not. I will take that into consideration.

Noted. I'll make sure to give the rock a good rinse before I set it in permanently. As for the last baffle, they are already cut and i really dont want to have 1 piece redone so Im stuck as is :(

Why was it annoying??

well think about it like this. the water goes in and just flows through the top of both baffles, rather than go into the fuge then over the next baffle.

Should have sprung for the 2600k

I also recommend drilling the tank for an overflow. The bottom of a none RR 75g is tempered so do not try to drill it, you need to drill the back or side. I just drilled my 75g a week ago for my build.

I haven't skipped out on lighting. I have a Tek Elite Unit. I would LOVE LEDs but with my setup since I dont want to have a hanging kit so would AI SOL blues be worth it if they are just going to be hidden inside a canopy? and only a few inches off the tank??

I see your point. Will try to call the glass shop and ask them to take an inch off and see what happens.

Should have sprung for the 2600k.

Picked up the 2500k for 180.00. Couldnt justify spending an extra 100 on the 2600k. Think the 2500k is the best bang for the buck

Maybe next time. Already ordered an overflow box from lifereef. I'll make do with it. Live and learn I guess. Unless I'm mistaken and I can do a setup like the gla**holes with the same overflow box. In that case sorry for misunderstanding????

Ok - need some help in deciding something. I have the chance of picking up AI SOL for a really really cheap price, granted if they hold till next week Friday (payday)

If I get enough convincing - I will return the tek elites (still in box).

My dilemma is this:

Will these be worth it even though I cant hang them from the ceiling? and they would have to be inside the canopy and only a maybe 4-5" from the water??? Will I have to worry about even more evaporation? Bleaching of corals(when I get there)?? Salt Creep? Not enough spread of light??

I have a short canopy which I can open the top or remove completely for the cooling (See post#8), and would need to mount them probably thru the side with the rails or the tank mount legs.

I could leave the canopy off completely but i would really try to avoid this as it goes with the look of the stand.

Over a 75 gallon. I am assuming I will need 2 units.

Anyone have pics of them being mounted on tank or inside a canopy. There was one there on here but the pics were too small to see anything.

You will need 3 AI's to get good coverage on a 75g.

It aint pretty but the sump baffles are done.

The horrible white silicone from HD makes it worse than it really is I swear!!!

<img src="http://i.imgur.com/CNdsm.jpg" alt="" title="Hosted by imgur.com" />

Couldn't get the glass company to cut off the extra inch from the LR to the return so it is what it is.

I thought the tank was 36" Long but it turned out the be only 30".

The return chamber got trimmed to just 6" while the LR section 8.5" :(

Water test tomorrow or Tuesday. Hopefully everything holds.

White silicone? That's probably not tank safe. I've never seen white silicone that did NOT have added chemicals/antifungals.

That's a small return chamber for a 75gal. I hope you have an ATO because I bet that return chamber will run dry every other day.

.OptimusPrime.
09/04/2011, 05:18 PM
GE Silcone 1 from HD for Window & Door is white (Blue label). The clear stuff is for Kitchen and Bath (Red label) which I believe has that antifugal stuff that you're supposed to stay away from.

If I am wrong, please let me know so I can fix it ASAP.

If the pump will run dry should I just resit the pump baffle at 10"?? or scrap the LR chamber all together and have the return be ~14".

I was hoping to get rid for the rock from the DT as I have 100# of the stuff.

Maybe when I aquascape I can make it work.

What I did was have the section where your skimmer currently is become the return. And take out that single baffle to the left and have a bigger skimmer chamber. I have a 48" stand with a standard 20gallon sump. I added a second 12 gallon tank to become a frag tank in the stand next to the sump. It currently just houses my extra lr right now though.

Can anyone verify that the white colored GE 1 window and door is reef safe??

I thought it was but now am second guessing.

u should use the tank silicone that they sell in petco and petsmart, i bet one tube would be more than enough for ya, can u still take those baffles apart and clean the old silicone or is it too late already?

.OptimusPrime.
09/05/2011, 05:39 PM
Its too late already :(

I did manage to take off the baffle on the left (as suggested) to free up more space and that was a PITA to do. Still havent gotten all the white silicone off yet.

I had read that the white stuff was reefsafe.

imo, itsa huge mistake with the hang on the back overflow. return it. drill the back with 1 or 2 1" bulkhead kits. bulkheads, are the way to go if you dont have the intank overflow setup. you'll thank us later.

I think i will end up getting a kit and drilling the tank. Would i need to drill 2 holes? One for return and one for drain?

Probably going to end up with a 700 gph kit from gla*******.

Where would i place the holes? An inch from the top and inch from the side?

Can i mount the box externally? On the outside of the tank so to free up more space inside?

.OptimusPrime.
09/09/2011, 07:45 AM
Pay day was today! So more money to buy tank stuff!

Bought some acrylic to make my own overflow. Box will be based on the 700 gph I put into the overflow calculator. Came out with 11" linear and 1.09" drain.

Box will be 6" L x 2"W x 4"H. should be 12" linear if I understand what the linear referes to. With a 1.5" bulkhead from BRS.

Ordered 4 stage economy RO/DI unit w/inline TDS meter and refractometer from BRS.

AI SOLs were gone :( but at 300 a piece who could blame em. Going to just stick with my tek light elites.

Drilling the tank this weekend. And hopefully get the plumbing done as well.

Need suggestions on how to do the return.

Should I place the overflow in the center with 2x 3/4" returns in each corner?

Overflow in the corner with the 2 3/4" holes still in the corners?

Or just a 3/4" hole in one corner and call it a day?

Also, sold about 30#s of the rock and the tank looks bare :sad1:

Any other suggestions or input is much appreciated.

Also, thanks to allsps40 for all the help hes given me on the questions ive asked him
