i got a starfish and it looks pretty big. each leg seems about 2" and it is about 5" in diameter. it is a sand sifting starfish. can i cut it in half and then cut that half into four to make it smaller/ i have read that they can regenerate but to what extent? also, how do i cut them? do i use a kitchen knife, sizzors, (those where wild guesses) or something like that? what do i do with the starfish after i cut it? do i just put it back in the tank? water quality is good. someone guide me through this. i am a step by step person and i need help.

It's not a mushroom. Please, don't cut it up. If you do, the different pieces will most likely die and turn to mush, fouling your water.

Most sandsifting starfish die in a few months due to starvation, whether you slice'em up or not.
