So I'm closing on my home finally after 5 1/2 months of dealing with a shortsale:blown:, and it's time now to make a stand big enough and nice enough to fit my skimmer that I got 10 months ago that I bought for my 40 breeder(also for maybe a 65 gal upgrade later with same dimension). Thanks to my cousin who is the best he is helping me build this. We're building this out of Mahogany and just putting on a clear coat, we found a great piece of wood at the store.

<a href="http://s499.photobucket.com/albums/rr351/vasilithegreek/?action=view&amp;current=IMAG0404.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr351/vasilithegreek/IMAG0404.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

There will be a hood also made out of the Mahogany, pics and design later.
Im pretty happy so far this, Im going to use a 40 breeder for my sump which still needs to be built(add baffles, not sure where to throw those in yet) but I cant wait to get my SWC bmk 150 in there. Ive been running skimmerless for about 1yr &1/2 now with ok growth. So there will be some updates soon on this. Enjoy!

Here are some of the cut pieces, we're using the lighter side of the darker pieces that you see.

We are going to use dado wood joints to hold the tank. Here are some 3d imaging.
<a href="http://s499.photobucket.com/albums/rr351/vasilithegreek/?action=view&amp;current=FishStandWithDoorsOn.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i499.photobucket.com/albums/rr351/vasilithegreek/FishStandWithDoorsOn.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Its going to be nice it will be fully open front and back and the doors are going to slide open for full access.

The back of the stand extends out to hide plumbing and the top pieces will be removable in case I need to do something. And the tank will look like it's sitting in the stand.

Changed door handles

i think the idea and design is great.
from what im guessing is that you re going to dado in 3/4" material across to support rear of tank????
the only thing i recommend is to build a frame inside the stand . you can build it from the same material and glue all joint together and glue faces to the frame. or dbl up what you have to have true vertical support.
did what i said make sense?!?!?
lol

good design. i have done a few that i extended the sids up to hide pipes and wires.

I like the look of the euro cabinets. Are you going to flip the grain horizontal?

Im glad you guys like it. I'm going to double up the braces that hold up the top

Don- everything is going to be horizontal to the floor
‎ since the cabinet is taller than it is wide, it'll make the cabinet look less skinny/tall.

looks like a sexier version to mine:

If the front and back are going to remain open (less the doors ) I would be greatly concerned about the entire stand racking side to side. This needs to be addressed. It is a very real possibility the stand will co-laps with all that weight on top without any bracing for side to side racking.

It is a very nice looking stand. Please reinforce it.

nemosworld-your tank is actually one of a few tanks we stole ideas from. I wanted to add some stained glass in the front for when the sump lights come on, would add a cool look.

peppie-yeah we are going to brace the sides in the back after plumbing is installed

Great build. Just wanted to mention that there is no need for second layer of 3/4 ply. One is more than enough to hold a 40B (that is if the sheets are just under the glass walls).

more than 1 year old and feels as strong as day one:

Edit: I missed where you say it would be nice to keep the front and back open. I'd put a full back and possibly somehing like a brace on the front. I agree that otherwise it would be too easy to collapse.

Some interesting ideas here. Looking forward to seeing your progress. I ended up with a $60 Petco metal stand for mine. I'm happy with it (because it is nice and sturdy), but it is open for all to see what is underneath it. I might end up covering it up using one of these ideas down the road.

Here is some updated progress shots, just have to get the plumbing all in and then a brace in the center and it will be done. (minus the hood)

That's really nice looking, much better than my 40B stand that has a 40B sump. :)

I used similar hinges, they certainly rust up nicely.
