I have noticed that my water has real small particles floating in my tank.I heard that a filter sock will help, but I'm not sure where I put it.I have a hang on filter that then goes into my sump then back into the tank.Where do I put or where can I put a sock?

I use one on the drain pipe to sump...100 micron. Has helped a lot considering I have a sleeper goby that likes to sift and sift and sift. I make sure it stays clean and have it setup in a way where it won't cause an overflow if it gets too dirty and water does not pass well through it.
Are you running any carbon? Filter socks will become Nitrite factories if not cleaned regularly. It's a really good idea to run carbon anyway, so it's a good way to kill two birds with one stone.

A happy healthy reef tank is supposed to have particles floating around in the water column IMO.

right on...I clean filter socks about every 3 days. I also do run carbon.

Yes I just cleaned my carbon last night. The water was dirty and I never could get the water to run clear.I don't know if it was cause if it was that dirty or black from carbon.
