To fellow reefers and the Red Sea Staff: After hearing some good reviews about Red Sea Coral Pro Salt Mix I deceided to give it a shot on my 2nd tank.

I just picked up a 200G Bag of Red Sea Coral Pro at my LFS to setup my 2nd tank. This was in the commerical pack and not the bucket.
The commercial Pack is just a big heavy plastic bag. My problem is the black/red ink that is used on the outside of the bag rubs right off from the heat of your hand, resulting in a big ink mess all over your hands. (didnt notice this until after the fact)

I opened the bag and started to grab cupfulls of salt to fill my 30g tub for mixing I closed the bag but before I noticed the Ink all over my palms. When closing the bag I must of touched inside the bag when folding the plastic back because the inside of the bag has red/black fingerprints inside. I also notice red/black pieces of ink now laying on top of the salt. The bag itself after folding it to reseal it basically looks like abstract art of black/red.

I am not really sure if the mix is safe to use at this point, unless i can scoop out the ink that I see at the top. This is the first time Ive used this salt and so far not really happy with this packaging.

MY LFS did not have a bucket, or I would of got that. The bag did not get wet, and didnt look like it was wet when sitting at the LFS.

Im going to assume the ink might be toxic to marine life, this is what I am worried about the most since I just filled my tank and mixed salt, but nothing is in it yet.

Any words of wisdom would be great..... Red Sea??

Thanks,

Good morning,
There is a reason those bags are for store and commercial use, usually they are used whole, unlike the buckets that are more user friendly.
You can pour the bag content to a well dried bucket, it will help you seal the salt and protect it from humidity.
As for the ink, you can scoop the big particles, and not to worry about tiny ones, they are insignificant.
You can send me(PM) the store contact info. so we can offer them to get our buckets for your and other customer’s convenience.
All the best,
Aviad.

Thank you for responding Aviad. I will move the salt into one of my 5Gallon food grade buckets. I was able to pull out the black/red ink off the top of the salt.

And just a FYI my LFS as of yesterday now has the Black/purple Coral Pro 175g Bucket mixes.

Should of been smarter when buying the bag I guess. No idea why they are even selling the commerical bags to consumers in the first place.

Thanks again,
