I put this thread in equipment but I guess it might be better to post here. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2080427

basically I am asking if I can use the nextreef MR1 instead of the SMR1 for bio pellets. I would use those craft screens just like people modify the phosban reactors. Just wondering if this would work ok. It's a lot cheaper and comes with a pump!

It does't look like it'll allow the appropriate amount of flow, but it might be okay. I'd get something else, personally.

why do you think that it won't be enough flow? just curious.

It is designed as a calcium reactor, which have very low flow. Trying to run a lot of flow through it might be noisy, and I'm not sure how well it'd spread the flow. There should be some cheap reactors around somewhere. The needs are very simple.

I agree, calcium reactors are easily clogged by the mulm produced by the bacteria and pellets.

I was under the assumption the MR1 is a multiple media reactor. It says you can run carbon or GFO in it too.. I didn't see calcium reactor anywhere. does that change anything?

Maybe. I can't see how it's pumping water through the system. It might be fine, but I'd need to check the product in person to see that it wasn't going to clog and would be okay for the higher flow.

yeah it'd be nice if they'd show the plate without the sponge in it. I'm assuming the only difference between the MR1 and the SMR1 is the SMR1 has a plate with smaller holes for the biopellets. I would think I could do the same mod as the two little fishes phosban reactor.

That might work well. You could look in the DIY forum, maybe, for some hints.

the mr1 works just fine for pellets, I've been using one for over a year. just take out the sponge and use the craft store cross stitching grid like you said.

thanks for the first hand experience! I may seriously get one! What pump are you using?
