Hello,
I have a schooling bannerfish, and it appears that it has a split dorsal fin with what looks like bone on one half and then flesh on the other. I attached some pictures. It started out with the flesh kind of stringy off the end, but now it's completely split. Is the fish ok? What do I need to do for it? It is eating very well and still very active. I appreciate in advance any help.

I'm really sorry if I'm being annoying here, but does anyone have any ideas on this? I'm pretty worried about the fish. I appreciate any help.

is he lethargic, or spunky?
eating or not eating?
alert or oblivious to motion?
if he acts normal then he should be fine

Thanks so much for the reply. He's alert, responsive, and eating very well. Do you happen to know why this has happened to him? I want to make sure it's not some kind of fin rot or something. All that's left of his dorsal fin is a little strip of flesh where it meets the body and then just bone for the rest of it. Again I really appreciate any advice here as to why this is happening.

This happened to our firefish. We believe he scraped it on a rock. It took about 3 months but the fin completely grew back. Not the same fish, but hopefully you will have the same result.

since you're having no luck in this forum, you may want to try posting this in the "fish forum" or "fish disease" forum. think you'd have better luck there
