View Full Version : Pics of my new SPS dominated rimless.

Figured I'd throw some pics up in the SPS forum seeing as this tank is most def. SPS dominated. The tank has had water in it since mid March of this year. So far so good; I'm extremely pleased with how my corals are responding in the new setup.

Tank: Rimless Leemar 40"x26"x21" Starfire front panel. Corner triangular overflow
Lighting: 24" Sifiligoi XR4 250wSE 4x24w T5HO fixture, M80 magnetic ballast, 250w Radium, 4x24w blue plus
Skimmer: ATB 840 v2.
Circulation: 2x MP-40w on opposing sides, Mag 9.5 for return
Controller: Neptune Systems ACJr.
Top off: Tunze osmolator
Dosing: 2x Drew's Dosers, B-ionic 2 part
Sump: 40 gallon breeder; baffle-less
2x Two little fishes reactors(gfo & carbon)

This is an upgrade from my old sumpless 29 gallon that was severely overgrown:

Yes, I remember seeing your old tank many times and being very impressed. But, I really love the dimensions of your new rimless and your scaping is nice. I am sure this tank will be just as impressive in no time, especially filled with corals like the dustins and clathrata!

Sure thing man, let it grow in a bit more for me and you got it.

Thanks man, I hope so! I went with a different style on this tank. Trying out the minimalist scape look and so far I really like how it's taking shape. In person it flows together very nicely.

What happened to your sand dollar monti, that thing looked great..don't see them as non-frags very often.
I have more sand dollar than I know what to do with haha. My old main colony, along with another huge colony reside in a holding tank on my dresser. I have a large frag in the tank on the left hand side but its not visible in the FTS.

Looking good ! Haven't seen your other thread pop up for awhile. I need to drive over to Monterey and pick up some frags. Lmk if you want to sell a pack. 
Thanks man. Yeah, I'm not sure if the general reef forum was the spot to put my thread. It seemed to just get passed over and within a couple of hours it was off the radar.

Yeah I'm sure we can work something out, most of the SPS are fraggable right now but some definitely need more time to mature.

Once again thanks everyone, I'll be sure to add pics and update when I can.

Thanks! I will definitely keep this thread updated for all of the stick heads.

As for the vortechs; I run one of them on nutrient transport mode full time, at around 75%. The other I run on reef crest set at around 60%. The reefcrest on a higher setting was literally blowing the tissue off of a couple of acros in some spots so I had to turn it down and everything has been good since. These settings have worked very well for me and I haven't had the courage to mess with them haha.

Thanks! Yeah the corners look a bit dark but to be honest there is hardly any shadowing in person. This reflector can cover a 36 x 36 footprint with ease. I purchased this light hoping I'd have some lower light zones on the sides for my LPS and such, and even then I've had some bleaching due to too much light in some of my chalices and a scoly.

Awesome, I love these dimensions! Couldn't be happier with my xr4 rewired with the m80 ballast. It's a great looking fixture with a beast reflector and relatively no light spill into the room. It's really a great design IMO. I have minimal shadowing in the corners on my 40" long tank with a single pendant. My scape is relatively low in relation to the fixture and I am growing Acropora and bleaching chalice with ease at the very bottom of the tank:). This light is bright; I think you will be very happy!

Beautiful tank!

My secret is I run a clear mesh net haha. Without it I'm sure I would have lost tons of fish already; fire fish included. I hear my fish hit the netting quite often. With 5 fairy wrasse and a pair of helfrichi its a must IMO.

Wow looks great best of luck with it

Thanks bro! The bbgum is insane man, everybody that comes by is amazed by it; it's that nice. These pics are old too, its probably 3x bigger now than in those shots.

I stuck the Jose's in a high light spot and it seems to be on the road to recovery. Great PE now and color is lightning up and gaining some sheen to it so I have hope.

The red polyp is painfully slow growing at first, especially branching growth. I will say that growth has been much faster in this tank than my other setup, and im even seeing quite a bit of branching on mine. I had a guy who works at ATL over the other night and he was in awe as hes never seen the coral throw out any branches what so ever. I got it in late 2010 as a fresh cut. Good luck with yours!

Looking good.. love the bubblegum milli! Thanks man, me too!!

While Naso's may help with Valonia, this tank already has a healthy, well established tang. Why disrupt the stocking dynamics that he has going now? :worried:

Naso's are very active and require at least double the display volume that this tank offers to thrive.

That may be a reasonable option in a larger tank, especially with the right dimensions. In this situation, that is a horrible idea in my honest opinion.

Bud,
Nasos are pretty peaceful tangs. I don't see either of mine arguing with any of the others I have. A small Naso could easily be placed in a tank of that size to rid the tank of Valonia, then removed without any harm to the Naso or other fish when it grows larger. Nasos don't grow fast either. If he has a tang in there already, then it is obviously not eating the Valonia.

A small Naso is a solution for an issue this tank has had for a while.

No need to stomp all over a suggestion that could help the OP. Put your Tang Police Badge back in your pocket.

Not sure. It would be nice to not have to build another stand. I was thinking something like 48"x30x22 or something like that, but having some extra length would be nice. In reality upgrading probably wont be feasible for awhile. For now all I can do is dream...or go see Steve if I want to look at a big tank lol

I have one in each of my two reefs, and not a trace of it any more. Thanks for the suggestion. Naso tangs are awesome fish with tons of personality. If my tank wasn't already packed to the gills with fish and coral I would possibly entertain the idea, then remove it soon after, as a 97 gallon tank would quickly become to small IMO. For now I'm stuck with manual removal and some stupid emeralds lol.

really nice, good job!

Totally unrelated to the mandarin vid...and back to the valonia. Has anybody had any success with dosing small amounts of hydrogen peroxide to the tank to rid bubble algae? A fellow reefer told me he did this and it worked great but I am skeptical to say the least.

Thanks again! I dont do anything special really. All I add to the tank is B-ionic 2 part via dosers, regular water changes and heavy fish feeding. I utilize GFO and ROX carbon is separate reactors and change both out frequently.

My fish get fed multiple times a day; usually around 2-3, sometimes more. I feed mostly frozen mysis and spirulina enriched brine shrimp. I also supplement feedings with nutra-mar ova and PE cyclops. For dry food they get spectrum Thera-A 1mm and they all seem to love it!

I believe the key to my success is that I try to keep things as simple as possible. Regular maintenance combined with heavy nutrient import/export practices seems to keep everything pretty happy.

Very nice.
Q on the fish, how big are the anthias and the tang?
Do the tang and the CBB get along?

Thanks again Jake, they looks great man.

The tang is probably right around 4.5-5", hasn't grown much at all lately. Anthias range in size from ~1.5-2" female to ~3" for the boss male. The CBB and tomini get a long great. The tang was a bit sour at first, but got over it rather quickly.

Nice. Good to know. Mine is almost similar dimensions, 36"x24(tall)x18 deep (oceanic 57 illuminata). Currently have a read headed salon wrasse and was thinking of those 2 as my last 2 fish.

CBB first, then tang I assume?

I'd go with the CBB first as an established tang might not welcome a CBB.

Here is a little updated iphone vid I took for a July update. Things are doing well for the most part.

Beautiful. I have to say; you've done so well keeping that Dustins Deepwater alive and having it grown so much. There are so many others who failed to keep it alive. Yours is doing real well. Keep up the good work.
