A few years back i was lucky enough to get to The night on the reef at Atlantis. Joe had these incredible fish called flashlight fish that would only come out when the tank went completely dark. They flew around the tank strobing every few seconds. After seeing this i had to get a few to see if they would survive. Ordered 3 from Live aquaria only to have them die after 2 weeks. Tried all kinds of food with no success. Pets warehouse brought in 5 or so a few weeks ago but i resisted in trying them again. From what i had read they needed cooler water and darkness to survive. A week or so later i asked the the guy at pets how they fared, and like i figured they never ate and only 2 were left. Week or so after that back in the store and didn't see any left but low and behold a couple of friends spotted one that was still alive. As we were checking him out the pets guy mentions that it's eating !! He drops in some mysis and sure enough he was! Pretty funny cause the poor thing was hiding under this tiny piece of plastic to get out of the light and would only eat what passed under the plastic. Took him home and kept him downstairs for a few days. He couldn't find much darkness in the bare tank so he hid under the koralia until the lights went out. He ate the first night in the tank which amazed me. Moved him upstairs into the 180 after a few days and he has become an eating machine. Can't find him during the day but the second the lights go of he flys out to the open to look for food. The light that he emits blows me away, just amazing!! Saw a cool video of a night dive in Papua New guinea on a shipwreck with thousands of them lighting up. Really cool. Hope he lasts. If that big tank happens down the line would love have a school of them. If you google flashlight fish you can see the video and some other cool info on this incredible fish
