Any thought/opinions on keeping a peacock in a 40 breeder glass tank?

It's fine, IMO. I doubt he'd pop it. If you want, you can put plexi glass on the bottom of the tank, to keep him from busting the bottom. It has excellent dimensions for a Peacock, too.

BTW, your profile picture is pretty horrific. lol

Thanks so much for the advice. Horrific?! It's a hot rod thing. You wouldn't understand. ;)

I say fine. I would put the plexi on the bottom. Also, DONT TEASE IT. Antagonizing it is a sure fire way to risk it popping the glass, and is generally mean anyway. :D

What do you recommend as far as flow in the tank? I was going to use some model Korallia. What about sand depth and composition? Is a cover for the tank a necessity?

I cover ALL of my tanks. You ever seen a mantis take a swim around the tank?(They do) You never know if they decide to get frisky, and accidentally fly out. I use glass over my tanks, but you can use egg crate- as long as the egg crate is weighted down, and the mantis is bigger than the holes, of course.

Not experienced enough on flow or sand to give advice...But, Peacocks can't handle bright lighting... Just in case you didn't know.

I usually use a 1/4" mesh clear netting in an aluminum frame to cover my tanks. Would that be sufficient?

I keep my 4" Peacock in a 40B. Used to have a 6" in there before.

OK going in a little different direction. I have access to a 20 gallon acrylic all-in-one aquarium with 3/8" walls. The tank is only 10" tall and will be uncovered. Would this be adequate for a Peacock?

Eeeeeeh, the general consensus seems to be 30+g. Although if you don't have your heart set on a peacock, you may be able to get away with a Havanensis in a 20g. http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/crustacea/malacostraca/eumalacostraca/royslist/species.php?name=o_havanensis

What about the height and the fact I have no top? I can have a longer tank made.

Need a bigger tank for a peacock. Get a smaller species if you want to use a smaller tank.

nanoreef16g

I understand that from the last reply my question was will the 10" height and no top be a problem? I stated that tank could be made longer just not taller at this point.

i'd say it's more than likely your mantis will wind up on the floor, they tend to dart around when swiming and could easly shoot right out of the tank.

OK thank you. 40 breeder with a nice snug screen top it is then.

nanoreef16g you’re a couple hours north of me, if your wanting tanks man I am still unloading some. I got a 40 breeder that’s coming down soon. It was for my Smithii but he’s going in a Nuvo 38 after he finishes his molt this week (grrr molting when I am trying to move him to a new tank). Mantis are funny I think he did his to me for a laugh. If your set on peacock then I think a 40 breeder is a hard tank to beat for size and floor space in its size range.

Also as a sailor and a car junkie I have to add this I like your Avatar.

Tundra, How much for the tank man? Thanks for the avatar love! My avatar used to be Rat Fink so I think we're on the same page.

How much flow for a peacock? I have two JBJ Oceanstream circulation pumps laying around but they're only 500 GPH. Is that enough in a 40 Breeder?

i have a peacock in glass with acrylic sheet at the bottem. I heavily regret this because the other day i saw him break into a thick shelled clam with a single clean hit. I would go for acrylic. I still have to wait for my custom acrylic tanks to come in so i can "hotel" my babies. My peacock currently has low flow. The only things moving water is the canister filter(205), the return from my sump, and a uv sterlizer(some nano thing). I have no powerheads in there with him.

Do you guys keep corals with your mantis?

05/09/2012, 11:06 AM
My peacock is in a standard size 29g with plexi at the bottom, I think I am at around a 30x turn over for circulation.

I'm sorry but this recent re-resurection of the glass smashing is quite over done imo. Dr. Roy has seen it only a couple times in his decades of research and only with extremely large mantis.

I will have a Mag 5 return I just don't want to have to buy more powerheads/circulation pumps.

How about sand depth? Should I add any artificial burrows?

gpx1200
05/14/2012, 10:25 PM
alot of peapole use pvc pipe but one of my favorite things about my mantisis is waching them build their homes from rocks ,sand, macro algie and whatever else thats in the tank. i would try and provide a big variety of different size rocks, pebbles, shells ect and let the mantis have at it, youll be amazed at what they can do with a pile of rocks.

What about sand depth?

gpx1200
05/14/2012, 11:24 PM
i'd say 3in minimum, 4 probably better for a peacock since they do like to dig and when it gets bigger mabie more would be ideal though if he wants it deeper a peacock might just pile all the sand in the tank in one corner

Anyone see a problem with keeping maxi/mini's with a peacock?

06/19/2012, 09:00 PM
I use a 3" black pvc pipe with a 2" reducer opening. It's just an elbow. I buried it under the crushed coral and live rock. My O. Scyllarus arranged a bunch of rubble around the opening and you can even tell there is a pipe in there. That was you don't have to worry about them digging. Mine is in a regular 30 gallon and is perfectly content. The breeder should be great. For filtration I have an Eheim 60 with a marineland power head. I also have some small rinky dink power head I used with my ten gallon tank. Plenty of flow and turbulence.

You can see her sticking her head out on the right entrance. She is a good decorator.

Nope. I have before. Now I just stick to the mps

What about small live clams as food? Like cleaner clams people put in their fuges.

06/23/2012, 01:34 PM
My peacock is in a 20 gal tall.I have had him for abput 6 months this way. I did add eggrate across the bottom as a bit of armor in case he wants to try and go deeper. I only added 2 inches of crushed coral but he has a huge amount of small rubble and shells to use as building material. Mine intents himself on masonry work and very little interest is shown in digging. If 30 gal is considered minimum I could possibly understand why as mine uses a very small portion of the tank he is in. I have seen mine swim the tank but have never thought he could jump out.

Also seeing tons of stuff about keeping a peacock with NO light. The room he will be in is pretty dark so I'd never see him. I picked up a cheap LED light with 24 three watt LED's. I was going to block off about 1/3 of the lights. I want to keep it low light but still see the shrimp. The tank will be pretty shadowed. Does this seem like a problem?

smaug1
06/23/2012, 05:22 PM
I have the elcheapo walmart 18w light on my tank and only turn it on for a few hours a day in the eveing for feeding and observation. They are much happier if the lights ar left off the majority of the time but as long as your light isn't too bright it shouldn't stress it for just a few hrs a day.

TundraGuy
06/24/2012, 01:25 AM
Just turn the light on when you want to see him and back off when done. Don't set it up on a photo period. There is a link to shell rot and light as of yet no one seems to have fingered the connection or why there is a connection just that there is one.

You'll go through a lot of clams! Mine would kill anything like that in his tank in short order. They wouldn't be in there long enough to do any cleaning that's for sure. The onl cleaner/food item that lives very long with mine are small hermits with xtra thick shells, they are good for 5 days if I add them at night.

TundraGuy

Thats why you do bulk orders like when Reefs2Go do the 100 bluelegs http://www.reefs2go.com/product/INV_CR_B-100-FS/Saltwater-Blue-Legged-Hermit-Crabs---keep-your-saltwater-aquarium-clean-%C3%83%C3%82%C3%82-naturally.html i try to get them when they are doing the buy one get one. yes thats alot of crabs!

Stunning bugger! I hope yours is the showman mine is. Peacocks are usually out and about a good bit and are master masons, give him lots of stuff to build with and rearange it for him once a month or so.

TundraGuy
06/26/2012, 06:06 AM
Yo nanoreef I still got that tank for you. I am going out of town for a couple weeks I may have to bring you that tank and check out the new guy. He’s beastmode!

nanoreef16g
06/26/2012, 09:23 AM
Sounds good to me Tundra. I was in a car accident right after we talked on the phone which totaled my only means of picking the tank up. We'll figure it out eventually. Yeah I can't believe how big he is. He was definitely either rearranging last night or getting a midnight turbo snail snack. Lots of racket going on.

smaug1
06/26/2012, 09:34 AM
You won't keep a cuc with him. Do be careful about putting many prey items in at once. Mine will either kill it as soon as he sees it hungry or not or he catches it and burys it in his brrow. It can foul the water real quick!

TundraGuy
06/26/2012, 10:04 AM
no good man hope all is well. so where did you get him from? is your store good with orders?

nanoreef16g
06/26/2012, 11:05 AM
I got him from That Fish Place. So far they've gotten in everything I've ordered in a pretty timely fashion. Seem to have access to a wide variety too.

smaug1
06/26/2012, 11:11 AM
I tried putting one on order there about a year ago, they got 2 of them in that time frame and never called me! I was able to get the one I have from them by chance during a visit to the store.

Jacwil
06/26/2012, 01:02 PM
Thats cool you were able to get one from them. Whenever I've tried to contact them re: a specific species, they always told me they didn't know....so I never ordered one from there.

Selcon good enough?

smaug1
06/28/2012, 08:35 AM
I have used selcon as a food soak for mine in the past. Its especially useful if done pre and post molt. Be prepared for molting! That's when most of them kick the bucket as its stressfull for them. When you start to notice they have barraced all there entrances and you don't see them come out at alll it is getting ready to molt. Don't mess with them at all during this time, even for a week or more after they will be out of whack. Keep up with wc but don't mess with them other then that.

TundraGuy
06/28/2012, 11:19 AM
Stressfull for them and you both. LOL!

smaug1
06/28/2012, 11:23 AM
My peacock has done it at least once and maybe twice since I had him. So far it has gone off without a hitch for him and I barely knew it happened. A chiragra I had a little while ago was a posterchild for difficult molting,it was horrible for 2 weeks for it everytime and I learned a lot!

nanoreef16g
06/28/2012, 12:37 PM
Yeah I've been reading about the molting process. Hopefully I'm a little prepared after keeping so many expensive wrasses and having them disappear under the sand for weeks and just learning to be patient instead of tearing the tank apart.
