Hello everyone,

I'm looking to get some ideas on the size of the return pump for my set up. I will be setting up a 95g aga wave front with a 1" bulkhead and a 3/4" return bulkhead that will be draining into a 30g sump/refugium though a durso standpipe. The return will have approximately 5' of rise and 2'-3' of horizontal travel, and (2) 90 degree elbows. My LFS recommends a rio 32hf that is rated at 1500 gph at a 4' rise which seems excessive to me, especially running through a refugium. I know I can install a ball valve to reduce the flow without constricting the pump but to me that means even more water flow through the sump.

Am I correct in thinking that a rio 17hf (840gph @ 4')or a rio 20hf (990gph @ 4') would be the more correct choice? or should I go with an entirely different return pump?

I've never used a Rio pump, but have you looked at the Eheim 1262? I have one that I used on my 90 gallon and now use on my 120. The 1262 is kind of pricey but it's quiet, runs cool and is very reliable.
