Does anyone have they're Vortech MP40 on the back pane? I want to try it but my tank is 30" front to back and I'm worried that the vortech will just blow all the sand around up front. I'm using the special grade reef sand. It's bigger and heavier than the sugar size.

Ive done it but it will probably blow sand around. If you already have it give it a shot.

i saw a tank in person, was a 120g 4x2x2 with two mp40s on the back pane. he did supplement with a standard powerhead pointing behind his rockwork, so i'm assuming theres a deadspot directly below the mp40s. he was tank of the month/quarter here in san diego. was gorgeous looking.

I tried it on mine, had to dial the flow down considerably, ended up placing it on the side. When I tried placing it on the back, the flow and undertow created two distinct sand "dunes". The first was by the front of the glass, then there was an area of no sand (unless blocked by the rocks), then sand towards the back glass.

I have 3 mp40's in my 210g. One on each side and one in the back. I have no issues with the sand being blown at all. The side ones are synced and the one on the back is anti-sync. They are on reef crest at 80-90%

one thing that I noticed was that the vortech tends to create an undertow and the spot just below it is usually stripped bare of sand completely. I poured clear epoxy resin and sand together to form a hard surface that still looks good to avoid this. You can add loose sand on top if you wish. Others have used sand/epoxy over their entire bottom for a "bare" sand bed but one that also looks nice. Just a thought

I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Here is my tank, 26wide,2 MP40's on the back glass at about 60-70% its only been set up for about 2 weeks, I like the dunes, but if it was a shallow sand bed, it would be down to the glass

I think you mentioned the big key in how well the sand will stay put...the size of the sand.
