Well I am aware and comfortable paying up to $1000-$2000 for a single fish....but $10000 is hard to justify....

Well I think that for the price of the fish and its size, this would have to be the most expensive fish I have seen to date online or instore.

Just bought a fire fish for $5 BALLING!
personatus angel go for $15000....japan often get illegally caught resplendent angelfish..those surely cost around 5 figure range.....deep sea basslets are also reaching such figures these days..gramma dejongi cost well over $5000 i think...even interruptus angel sell for $3000-$5000 in europe and america.....prices of clarion is less than that..
to put such price on clarion is absurd, first asking 15000 then showing 6000 rebate(even in oz)...this shop is nothing less than con in my belief...

The shop is not a con, it exists. Unfortunately I can't explain the price list which is obviously all over the place.
Shame they don't get their act together and change this, as it does make them look pretty unprofessional IMO.
BTW if you're a local after a Clarion you wouldn't be paying that unless you were pretty gullible.

pretty much this...i know clarion is pricy in S-E Asia and Oz,but that price is outrageous..

I think a lot of it has to do with the relative rarity of the fish given where they are found. A Clarion angel (which is already extremely expensive in the US, and much closer to its natural range) is even more expensive in Asia and Australia due to the transportation costs to get it there.
I would expect to see certain fish, like Marshall Island's wrasses and others to be much less expensive in Australia.
All that said, I doubt they have many/any of those fish in stock or would be able to get many of them. Personatus and Peppermint angels aren't easy to come by even if you've got the $15K or $25K in hand and ready to spend.

In the freshwater hobby, some fish go for significantly more than this (by a power or two).

No offense, but if I am paying $10,000 for a fish I better be able the reshingle my roof or something, lol. No way in hell would I ever drop that much on a fish. My luck, it wouldnt like my tank and die in a day or 2, then I would be looking for a new place to live as my wife would probably divorce me for buying it in the first place.

FWIW we have not had a clarion legally come into Aus for at least 18 months. There is only one person who can bring them in (legally) and hasnt recieved one although he has an order for 2 for that time frame

I must be in the minority then. I figure I'd probably get turned down for a loan at the bank for that purchase. Laughed at along the way. People who buy these fish are RICH def. not ur average Joe.

Understanding the price of a fish is impossible when all your looking at is a stock photo of that fish and a number.
I would suggest before making such statements as to how crazy or impossible such a purchase is, that you might ask questions as to why that fish is so expensive.
Fish are not all just priced based on color and size. If you take the time to ask meaningful questions you might learn more about the hobby. Facts other than the fact that there are very expensive fish that people do buy and sell.
Now who's up for a gem tang or some deepwater angels?

It doesn't make it wrong or bad IMO.

Well in my opinion you have to be wealthy or nuts.
You can make that statement about anyone who spends more than a certain arbitrary amount on anything, depending on where your priorities are; cars, houses, food, clothes. I know people who live in small apartments and have no car who have spent this much on fish. For them, their aquariums are the big thing, and they don't care about other things that you might consider essential. That doesn't make your priorities any better or less "nuts".

It doesn't, as said earlier. You'd be surprised with some of the people who own some rare and expensive fish. For many it's more about the interest and having the fish than the money. Like I said earlier. I understand it likely feels like we are picking on you. I think in time you may come to appreciate these fish and their prices.

The fish in my avatar goes for $15k when it appears in the market. And no, I don't have one, but saw many in person and photographed this in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands.
As for being nuts by paying that much, I say I would rather pay that much for a fish than a wrist watch (not that I have this kind of money anyways, haha).
that is nothing compared to some Koi worth over $300,000, not to mention some arowana color morphs for over $400,000.
I actually think a Koi has sold for 2.2 million if I recall.

Thanks A_Z, also lets not only focus on how much these rare fishes go. I think I would be sweating bullets if I was to spend this kind of money and not be completely ready to take care of it. I mean is an animal so having a VERY expensive fish, you have to have some VERY GOOD EXPENSIVE equipment to avoid anything from going wrong. The fish can die the next day after you gotten it and BAM your money goes down the drain lol

I don't think many few thousand dollar fish just wind up dead two days later for no reason. If a fish is worth a potential 5-15k you can bet that it will get special care along the way to it's new home. It's no different for other high end "pets".
It's not getting the green chromis treatment... Most all are properly decompressed and treated for any infections or parasites that may come along.

One of my favorite 'rare' fish collectors is from right here on RC.
Chris, A.K.A ccampbell57. Here's a quote from his signature.
Rarity and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Don't ask "how much $" a fish costs but rather "how much enjoyment" will I receive from this animal.
The price is in Australian dollars. I don't know the exchange rate but it should be significantly less in U.S. currency.

FWIW i think we are all nuts when it comes to fish keeping, we spend way too much money on it all. But then we also get way too much enjoyment out of it too. :D

I agree. I dont care about all these other posts trying to justify spending 10k on a fish... in my world its just crazy. You can spend your money on whatever you want, but that doesnt mean your not nuts. My mother-in-law thinks Im crazy because I spent 139.00 on a fish. 10k on a fish...C'mon Man.

Whether or not something is expensive depends on two things:
1. How much you personally value the "something."
2. How much money you have. $5 is a lot if you're broke. For some people $10K is pocket change.
In my case, I won't ever be able to afford such a fish. Well... maybe if I sell a kidney.

Im with the you guys, thats a ton of money, especially for people like me who dont make that much in 6 months, but if i found a fish that intrigued me and gave me a great deal of joy to keep, then i would be more than willing to work hard to save the money up, and that would make it all the more enjoyable knowing i had to sacrifice to get that fish. So if someone can pull that kind of money out of their couch cushions, or if they have to work and save and budget for 3 years to afford it, i dont think its crazy if thats what they want to do with their money. The point of having money is to enjoy the things you like in life, and whether its cars, sports souveniers, nike shoes, watches, fine wine, cigars or fish, thats what we should be allowed to spend our money on, without worrying that somebody in an online forum is going to assume were rich OR crazy. Theres a large difference in rich, crazy, and passionate. IMO

Yes, he is for real. That's what I was discussing above. Ever see someone who lives in a hole but pumps thousands and thousands into a souped up car? Would you say they're obviously wealthy? I wouldn't. It's all where you prioritize your money.

The guy pimping out his ride may not be the sharpest tool in the shed either. Yeah, you can spend your money however you wish and crazy is not the right word... dumb is probably better. Ive done some dumb things in my life too but Ive never dumped 10k on a fish that may or may not live.
