a buddy of mine up upgrading his 29g to a 37g. i have an extra 175w mogel socket MH, and was wondering if that center brace would block too much of the halide light. also on the tank will be T5 actinics....

it will be fine with the T5's however the best light comes directly under the MH and the center brace will block alot of it. on tanks with a center brace it is best to use 1 mh on each side of the brace.

i understand you should be using two. but i have one laying around and wondering if it wud be worth him adding to the setup. its goin to be a mixed reef.

It won't really work too well, and if the center brace is plastic, the MH (depending on the kind) might melt the brace. I had that happen with my old 38 gallon tank.

Center braces don't work very well with MH and/or reef tanks ime.
