Well I'm going to expand and upgrade to a 40 breeder
now I was going to go with 6x39 t5 setup
but I've been seeing a few good deals on 250watt metal halide
would one 250 watt be enuff for the 40 or will it be too much heat
any experience would be appreciated

I use 2x 175 halides on my 40- no heat issues.

I used a 36 inch 150 x 2 halide fixture. Better spread of the light. Just another option.

using 2 will yield better coverage,, one unless high enough wont. it took about 3' of height for me to get a single 250 to cover , i had awesome growth and pure purple rocks in 4 months. i also just broke down a single 150 over my 40 with tons of sps. it was more than fine just the coverage wasnt great but worked out awesome that my lps loved the shaded areas and the sps loved the center. it really depends on what your keeping. i now have a 4x39 with reflectors that will grow just about any sps and clams. for half the heat.

I like the idea of using t-5's on this. If u like shimmer put a couple leds on it.

250 is not to much, not even close people run 400s on 29 gallons.
