I recently decided that version 2.0 of my 'Overkill' reef would include a set of LEDs and I happened upon the AI Sol Blues which I quickly mounted above my tank going from this:

to this:

However, I didn't the fact that the fixture itself was oriented from front to back (therefore spilling too much light onto the mirror behind the tank) so I bought another set of rails and took some liberties with a a chop saw and a dremel to cut the rails to 8 13/16" and then I used a 6mm tap to add threads to the new ends. The finishing touch were the 6mm stainless-steel pan head screws that fit into the grooves perfectly.

Now I just need to reposition the ceiling mounts to take advantage of this set up:

(Please ignore the state of my tank as I am in the middle of a major re-aquascaping)

Just thought I would share.

Jeff... I believe that's the cleanest way to hang AI's so far length-wise yet! Many people have had to deal w/this issue and whining about not being able to attractively hang them in this direction over the tank has been rampant. Myself included although I have not whined publicly ;) ... But I need length wise mounting as well. I guess the down side is that you have to pony up for the 2nd hanging kit... but the solution is very nice and clean.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks

The good news is that you only need < 9" of a rail to make this work so you can buy a short set and share the other rail with your friends :)

Or some enterprising person (with more time than me) could make a bunch of these and sell them for a profit.

I like the AI metal brackets above, I just had some left over Plastic that I thought would do the job nicely and the AI's work well with the clear for life 14" width and I bought one less module- more money for live stock!:bounce3:
