i plan to mount the heatsink to the 2 cross members on the underneath of the hood. there is 3 holes on top of the hood for air. if i mount the fans on top of the hood that will put the fans about 3 inches from the back side of the heatsink and will leave the hole in the middle open for exiting air. do the fans need to be closer to the heaetsink or is that close enough?

Almost certainly just fine. With such a massive heatsink you probably don't even need the fans, but they won't hurt.

Though looking at your photos begs the question - what's the rest of the hood like? I am guessing there's more to it than that one piece.

yes there is more, thats just the very top that sets on the frame thats about 7 inches tall. think of it like a lid to a box.

thanks for the answer to my ? i was wondering if would need the fans but wanted to add them anyway just to be safe.
