Yes
you see orange, green red, maroon variations all the time in the wild. its hard to keep the same coloration long tern in an aquarium. i see it in shaded, or undersides of live rock.
if he has really fresh rock, perhaps some is growing back.

It is not uncommon for some of the red "jelly" type algaes to turn flo orange after being exposed to air or fresh water. It disappears within hours though. Orange coraline agae does exist though to be sure- but it is rare in tanks.

There's coralline, montipora setosa, echinophyllia, and some species of sponge that are bright orange like that and encrust like that :) Sounds pretty whatever it is.

I've observed this occurance with heat damaged red coraline algae. A clear delineation is visible and the orange color is pronounced under blue light. However I also have different hues of orange coraline algae, mostly on the undersides of branching rocks. It's bright orange but not at all flourescent.

Here is the pic he sent me......he said it glows when moon lights are on and is still orange when all lights are off.....and encrusts just like the coralline, smooth and thin...

he did recently( few months ago) collect some stuff from the ocean that might have brought it in. I'm going to take a ride down there in next week or two and check it out.

Yep. Used to have some growing on the return line in the display. I dont believe its very hardy, purple stuff overgrew it pretty quickly.

My LFS has a tank that is full of it. EVERY piece of rock in the tank is covered with it. It's awesome.

I've been seeing this more and more in my tank. It starts off bright orange then over the course of a few days starts to turn red.
All those red spots used to be bright orange.

Just today I turned over a rock that was shaded and halfway burred in sand and it had bright orange coralline spots on it.

I have some orange coralline in my tank, (or at least did before a large algal bloom) lr from the east china sea. I like the look quite a bit.

Yes there sure is. I notice orange coralline on my hermit crab's shells after they hid for a while for a molt. This rock was shaded for some time. The iPhone tends to over saturate, but it is bright orange. Check this out.

I had the same thing on my hermit crab snails, it lasted about 2 weeks and is now turning purple. I wish I could get that to stay, it looked really cool

I know. It seems to only grow in lower light. I also get highly florescent pinks as well.

+1 this is very common. IME it dies after a week or two once it has turned fluorescent orange.
Its a result of the chlorophyll degrading/decaying leaving behind the phycobilins which fluoresce a certain wavelenghts of lighting. (typically orange)

I know this thread is a little old... but I just found orange coralline in my tank!
I was *so* excited.
I had a clear plastic container with some softies in it, trying to get them to take hold of some gravel. I picked up the container while cleaning, and under it I found a shell with orange coralline. It was so bright I thought it was fake, some debris must have come in on the sand. Then I saw another little speck, and another!
I was in the middle of cleaning, so finished up and then did some google searches. By the time I learned that the color fades when exposed to light/air, it was too late to get pics :(
The elusive orange coralline DOES exist!
