Waiting for my HOB overflow (cpr 1200 gal)
Decided for my 55 gal to have 30 gal sump.
I have a coralife super skimmer 65 currently HOB.
Thinking about purchasing a long tank to possibly have refugium as well.
Going to diy the sump.
I currently have 2 maxjet 400 for flow in the tank, plus the skimmer. I want the skimmer in the sump if possible. Looking to add a maxjet 1200 for return. I am setting this up for a reef tank so do I need more flow in the display? I have shutdown the canister filter as well as a HOB filter I had running for added flow.
Any thoughts?

The water movement in your DT should be adequate but it really depends on what you'll be keeping. I'd stay away from SPS. You don't need the canister filter since you have a skimmer. The fuge is a good idea and an interesting addition that a lot of people enjoy.

You realize the Maxi-Jet 1200, when used as a utility pump, doesn't come anywhere near 1200 GPH right? You don't have to have a pump powerful enough to max out your overflow, that'd probably be a bad idea, but even with 0 head pressure that MJ 1200 isn't going to even be in the same ball park as 1200 GPH.
If you actually had a return pump pushing 1000 GPH or so you'd probably have enough total flow with the 2 MJs you have with proper positioning.

+1 to above. You may want to look at a mag 5 or similar. How far the water has to be pushed up is key 1 thing. Also think about if you will be adding things you may want to run of your return as well ie..reactors, chiller, ect. I ran ino this problem over the summer and had to to a larger pump to run the chiller and the reurn. Research the pumps within your budget, especially the flow charts...find one that will pump the GPH you want at how high it needs to go...also RC has a calculator for this. I have a 75 with 30 gal sump, i use a mag 5 without the chiller, very nice gentle flow...with the chiller I have the large mp40 external running 1300 gph...just throttled back a bit. Happy Reefing!

I also have a 55 gal and am getting a sump. I'm actually going with a mag7 just to be certain. You can always throttle it back. Can't make it push past max.
