View Full Version : Tell me about your CORAL quarantine tank

So I'm in the process of setting up a quarantine tank for new corals. Thus far, I have a 29G tank with LED lighting, a heater, a Koralia pump, and a rack.

I have at my disposal a CPR backpack skimmer, a HOB filter, dosing pumps, and various supplements (Mg, Alk, Ca, KW). Also, I am not at all averse to purchasing any additional necessary equipment.

So my question is, how do those who are experienced with using coral quarantine tanks do them?

1. What equipment should I be using to keep the coral happy and healthy while in quarantine?
2. Should I keep my parameters (like calcium, Mg, Alk) in check with water changes or should I dose these and simply add RO/DI water in my topoff?
3. Those of you who quarantine corals, do you also use a dip such as CoralRx before quarantine?
4. How long do you observe your corals in quarantine before moving to the display tank?

Those of you who are about to respond, "I've never quarantined my corals for x number of years and never had a problem," please don't bother. This is not a thread to rehash whether or not it is necessary to quarantine corals:deadhorse:, but rather how one should go about doing it.

Thanks in advance.

The only coral I quarantine are the coral that come on a big piece of live rock, as my main concern at that point is Ich. My QT is always ready to go, with biomedia sitting in the sump so that I have a mature filtration system once I start the QT process. For these coral in this set-up, I dip them in Coral RX, then leave them in QT for 6 weeks under CF lighting. Water changes usually not needed, but I check parameters frequently just in case. I have a small powerhead in the tank to supplement the flow from the biofiltration.

For coral on a small plug, I just do Coral RX dip.

Dunno if this is the right way to do things, but I feel comfortable with it.
