MH Hanging

Hi,

I am getting a new 250W MH fixture. I have about 18" between the water and the ceiling to put the fixture into. The fixture is 5" high.

My question is how high should I hang the fixture so that is it is high enough off the water, but does not burn the ceiling. I am not sure how hot these get on top.

That's going to be a very tight squeeze. I'd hang it as high as you can and get a fan to blow air around (and over) it. My 5MH fixture (3 250w & 2 150w) is 8" off the water and 7" from the inside of my canopy. I don't have any issues with the canopy getting too hot and I'm not using an external fan anymore.

I know that I may have to put it closer to the water than I would like, but I just want to make sure it does not burn the ceiling.

Anyone else have advice? How much space is recommend between the fixture and the ceiling?
