Saw another thread that got me wondering, how many people have a large (let's say 90+ for the sake of definition) on a crawl space? Anybody not brace them and not haviing any problems? I had a 180 on top of an old (probably 60's) crawl space with no braces, and aside from a little shaking when I run next to it, it was fine.

I have a 360 but I put floor jacks under it for safety.

If it moves at all I'd put floor jacks under it.

When I lived in a townhome I had a neighbor that had 2 60gal tanks stacked on top of each other on both sides of the upstairs bedroom. So he had 4 60gal tanks on the top floor and we even had a crawl space lol.

I would have to give you the engineers favorite answer. It depends! There are several factors that would need to be considered. While it is true that older homes generally used beefyer framing, most important is how the load is transmitted down to the foundation. If you are over a supported beam, especially a steel one that runs down the center of the house, you could safety support a very large tank. If you are loading 2x8s or even 10s in the middle of a long Span, your margin is much less.

All that said, it is likely safer to just brace it with some jacks and have piece of mind.

125 and 40 sump on a crawl, near a foundation wall, perpendicular to floor joists - no additional supports or problems for almost 8 yrs. /woodknock Likely upgrade to a 180 in 1-2 years in the same location.
