I read a lot about lanthanum. I have a diatom filter (old discus days).
When and where to use filter? Would I put the lanthanum and diatom filter
in the DT or sump, and run it right away or wait awhile. And how long do you think I should run it. Or maybe not even run it every time I add lanthanum.
Always enjoy and learn something from your post.
Thank You. Dave

Adding the lanthanum upstream of the diatom filter so that any solids that formed were caught in the filter would be a reasonable way to use lanthanum. I'd run it in a sump, and dose lanthanum very slowly into the inlet to that filter, if possible. :)

Sorry but how often should I dose? I will be using Blue Life Phosphate RX

Well, that depends on what you are trying to accomplish. A good system would be a setup on a timed doser than dribbled a little in each day. :)

I have a BRS doser. Say I dose 10 ML a day four times. When and how should I
run the diatom?

I'd run the diatom directly downstream from the dosing and run it at least as long as it takes all the treated water to get through it. Running it longer is OK too, with the goal to remove any lanthanum particulates that form (lanthanum carbonate and phosphate, primarily).

Dug out the old diatom filter. Here's how I was thinking of using it. If I turn off my sump pump some of the water from the DT will siphon into the sump. Then I would dose the
lanthanum, run the diatom filter in the sump and leave the protein skimmer running. If you think this would work how long should I run the filter? Really rather not use it because it's a PITA. I have another idea let me know what you think. I am running a reactor with BIO pellets. The reactor is less than half full of pellets. Could I put a screen just above the pellets and fill the rest of the reactor with GFO
Thanks, Dave

Yes, that filter use sounds like a fine plan. I might run it for 10-20 minutes. Note that diatom filters will release a bit of silicate. That's OK (I dose silicate), but if you get a diatom problem, it may be the culprit.

Running GFO in the reactor is another fine plan, although I can't be sure of the mechanics of how that will work out.. :)

Thank you. GFO it is.

Just a thought, would diatom filter remove Dino?

It might remove them from the water passing through it, but not do anything for those elsewhere. :)
