I just got my first duncans about a month ago and I must say I really like these corals, they seem easy to care for and grow fast. I bought a frag with 2 heads and one of them has 4 smaller ones growing on it already and the other has 2 little ones growing on it.

So lets see them! I havent seen any color other than green though, any other colors for these guys?

Heres mine, iphone pic :rolleye1:

Here's my Duncan Colony, started with 2 heads bout 1 1/2 years ago. The key i've found is to feed the beast! :)

I bought a 3 headed frag that looked great for a few days, took food well and then about 5 days later started to withdraw. Now it's half out. I'll take pics tomorrow but this is what it looked like when I got it.

These were a fluorescent teal base with pink tips and a slight blue frill. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to care much for 97 degrees one day when my cooling fan failed on my pico.

Nork, I really like those.I've been wondering how much their diet has to do with coloring.Mostly feed mine formula one and prawn eggs.

My, close to 40 head, Duncan. Definitely one of my favorite corals. You can't beat them, imo. They're hardy, they grow fast and are very beautiful. All of that and you don't have to kill yourself caring for them

Some amazing corals here. Near the top of this thread I posted my 2 frag head. This is what it looks like now. It almost looks like it is dividing but the tentacles are not extended the way they were. Does anyone know what's happened to Duncan? Please excuse the blurriness, my macro doesn't do well through water for some reason. Oh and they are taking food so not sure what's going on.

My Duncan looked like that a few days after I got it as well. When I got it, I put it in my 29G coral quarantine tank lit with LED lighting. I have a Vortech 10W on one side of the tank in EcoSmart Tidal Swell mode. I built a three-step shelving system out of egg-crate so I could place coral at three different light (and flow) levels.

At first, I put the duncan in the middle, where it received medium light and medium current. It looked ok for a day or two, but then closed more and more over a few days' time. I moved it to the upper rack and it didn't like that any better. I finally moved it to the lowest shelf (lower light and medium flow) and it recovered nearly overnight. It is now open much more fully than it was even at the store. I feed it every couple of days and it seems quite happy. Now I've got to move it to the display tank and find the "sweet spot" again.

I suggest you move yours around a little and see if you can find a place that makes it happy. You should know within a day or two whether that spot is your little Duncan's "sweet spot."

Crazy cool looking Duncan you have there, BTW. Hope you get it to go.

HTH.

I bought a 3 headed frag

Was that from the swap at ABC? I got one of the single-head frags they had. This is my first Duncan but I love it so far. Eats like a champ.

Good luck with yours - I agree with the other person who suggested moving it around a bit. Mine is in fairly low flow and medium-low lighting, if that helps any.

It would be great if some of the people who have had these long-term could post conditions under which they have done the best.

der_wille_zur_macht, yes it was, aren't they the coolest and for $10 for three heads! Should have bought more! I am trying to figure out who you were? Where were you set up?

I am happy to report that mine is doing well now. I think it may have been hungry. A few days of twice a day feeding perked it right up. :bounce1:

So how often do people feed theirs? I fed mine some shrimp and my homemade mix and they will take pellets as well.

Windy, I wasn't set up and probably flew under the radar. And you got a good deal - I thought the multi-head colonies were more money, my $10 frag has only a single head. But it was still a good deal in my book.

Here's a shot of the Duncan's we did get at the ABC swap, Medium high flow and about halfway up under 4 X 39w T5's.

That would be one of my favorites too. Amazing colony you there. What kind of flow do you have going at it? I keep trying stronger flow but mine just shrinks up and when out is all stubs.

milkman55

I keep it on the sandbed in a 120 gal predominately SPS tank with two MP40's on each end alternating back and forth. It gets a good deal of flow as you can see from the picture, but it is indirect and not directly in line with the pumps. I have a large torch, frogspawn, and hammer on the sand along with the Duncan. The all grow well under these conditions.

I have a questions about duncan corals. Ive had 2 different frags in my life. Both started off with one head and both came from a branching colony. Both grew into a ball of duncans and neither of them ever branched out. I thought this was supposed to be a branching coral that was easy to frag, like a frogspawn.

milkman55
12/12/2011, 09:25 PM
There are multiple varieties of Duncan coral, but I could not find the scientific names for them. I have both the "clumping" variety and the "branching" varieties. They are very different, but share similarities in the head of the coral. Seems like the branching varieties have thicker tentacles than the clumping varieties.

I have mine at the bottom of 24 inches at the moment as I start new lights (LED). How can I get some meaty food to it without sticking my hands in the water. A baster won't work as I still have to put my hands in the tank and the extendable feeder I have is too narrow an opening for meaty food. When i had it in the 29g I did put my hand in and drop food onto the polyps. Now it's very impractical and I'd rather keep my hands out of the tank on a daily basis.

Make a feeding tube out of rigid airline tubing connected to a syringe with soft airline tubing. On the other end I put another inch or so of soft tubing so I'm less likely to injure anything while feeding. Cheap solution. I use mine to feed a wide variety of corals and also to aim food at the more shy fish that get left out by the more aggressive feeders.

I use a Sea Squirt. To make it work for larger foods, I took a pair of the large nail clippers and just kept cutting the tip back (about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch) until the opening was large enough for mysis and others of that size. It was still able to hold everything in well at that size. Make it too large and you'll have a good bit pouring out before you can squirt it
