View Full Version : 250G's Return to SPS

The time has come to get started on my new system.....

As some of you recall I sold my rather large system almost 2 years ago, and have been without a tank since. During this time I have been living vicariously though some of your threads......now it's time to get another SPS system up and running and I thought I would share some of the details here.

The tank:
As my accommodations are not permanent, my system will be smaller. A have been cycling a 55G 3-sided starphire peninsula tank for 4 weeks Thursday Dec. 8.

This being said, on Saturday December 3 I put down a deposit on a new custom built 90G 3-sided starphire tank with an external overflow. Oddly, I had no intention of replacing this tank due to size limitations. However in my ventures back through the LFS's I learned of another custom tank builder in Toronto, a person I have known for almost 10 years and I am confident will do a great job (as some of you know my Miracles tank pulled apart after about 9 months...). They have been building a shipping tanks for some time now so I figured why not, the 55 will be overgrown in no time....anyway the tank will also fit on my existing stand and the external overflow will ensure silent operation as the tank is in the living room. New tank will be 36l x 24W x 24h peninsula, 3-sided starphire. 55G will be sold in the new year.

The lighting:
36" Vertex Illumina 260 LED Lighting Fixture.

Despite my LOVE of halides, my confidence they achieve great results, and the fact I already have the ballasts for them....as soon as I saw this light in action at Advanced Reef Aquatics I had to have it. Saves electricity, no bulb changes, it will pay for itself in the longer term...I have had it for a week, look forward to setting it up in the next day or two. Have been cycling my tank with T5's.

Other Equipment:
Essentially all recycled from the old system. Will be using the MTC ProCal remotely from the basement. Medusa temperature controller, tunze's and controller, 1" sea-swirl...kept much of my live rock and it in the tank now.

Stocking:
Not entirely ensure of my approach, but I may go all frags. I look forward to getting in tough with many of the good people I met up with over the years and bought/sold/traded frags with. I only hope my PMs work - I have the worse luck with them....Dwayne for example! Sorry Man.

Anyway, stay tuned for pics and updates, charging up the batteries in the camera now.

Tank will be all SPS - only LPS will be a frag of my wicked torch if I can track one down! Cheers.

Look forward to your new adventures with SPS and LED's. I think there will be many who will be particularly interested in your setup; it is obvious that your knowledge and husbandary of an SPS tank is high calibre and hence this will be a very good test for LED's for SPS - we know LED's grow SPS, but the colour issue is still uncertain even though there are a few LED lit SPS tanks with very good colour.

wow your last tank was jaw dropping. The colors on your acros and size of the colonies was unbelieveable. I still can't believe you spent all that time and energy to fix the basement up just to your liking and then sold the house a few months after you finished it. Hopefully you like the house your moving into. I can't wait to see what you do with this tank.

Thanks all - I am rather looking forward to getting the system going again........the last 4 weeks have been tough just looking at rock, water and diatoms.........I did get the chance to get some of the fish I wanted however. mystery wrasse, fire fish, dwarf golden moray, and some blue-eyed cardinals. Flame wrasse and a tang still planned........

regarding the skimmer - purchased a Bubble King Mini 200, in sump. MTC HSA is still in the basement, tough to ever want to sell it, but the time may come.

Planning on adding some SPS in the next week or so, suspect it should be safe after a month...

Regarding some of the specific comments:

Yes LED was not an easy decision, given the proven performance of MH. I would have never purchased one without seeing it in action. These lights are bright, so I don't understand why the corals should not respond accordingly.

I will be certain to keep everyone updated on my experience - I have certainly benefitted from other equipment pioneers in the forum. Still tough to justify swapping out existing lights given the price of the technology.

Ditto! - I've been sitting on the fence with Led's for quite awhile - and really like the vertex also - the look is the best out there IMO - so will be following along quite closely

lets be honest.............you are the current belt holder best I can tell, least in Canada!

I retained Atlas Custom Aquariums, the design and construction side of Advanced Reef Aquatics in Milton. Honestly, had I not learned they now build I would have stuck it out with out the 55G. I saw some of their work in the shop, their commitment to top quality work is apparent.

Well it is a dwarf golden moray, and they only get to be 12" full grown. Honestly, the single most impressive animal I have ever kept in my aquarium. I will see if I can find the pic of the pair I had (it's the background on my iphone). The cardinals I am speaking of are tje Blue-eyed cardinal (Apogon leptacanthus), I have not lost any, keep in mind the DGM will only eat what it can fit in it's mouth, and it's mouth is tiny. I have never lost a fish to one, to my knowledge.

Hey Dwayne. Been a while man. Tried to contact you on another board, but you know how that place can be. I saw your thread, good to see things are finally recovering and stabilizing. As a matter of fact I will be headed to the west end later in December and would love to see your set-up, pick up a frag or two if you have any available. I will send you a PM or post in this thread closer to the time.

How do you like the 260???

Dec is busy of course but I look forward to showing off my "stuff"!

I love everything about the Illumina except for the fact that I havent been very successful up until recently. I had a 5' 200 that I eventually sold over my DT but couldnt make SPS happy, lost a bunch. Went back to ATI T5 as I know for sure it works. Then thru a new 24" 260 over my work tank ( a system 70Elos 30w x 24 deep x 24 tall) and proceeded to kill everything in there. Back to 250 on the work tank :(
Took the 24" 260 and put it over my Frag tank with test corals and started 30 30 30 and have ramped up slowly to 60 80 80 and everything is fine but colour takes a long time to develop.
So its a love hate thing. Im going to wait another six months for more technology to catch up LED wise before I try again over my DT. I cant take that again !

Thanks Tim - going to TRY and keep the sickness in check. I am limited in size with the tank.....that being said all my old live rock is already drilled to facilitate pegging corals.

welcome back to the sickness dave :D. lookin' forward to your build...

Thinking the week after Christmas if you are around.

Yikes - that light really had such an impact on your work tank? Seems pretty extreme but I have never owned one....I would suspect serious bleaching but death is pretty bad!

Perhaps I will have the distinct advantage of all new frags being introduced to the lighting from my 260 as this is a new tank??? Start them on the bottom and move them up approach. I hear a lot of stories about people having troubles when the attempt to swap out lighting with LED, guess I will see shortly.

I should be installing my LED over the 55G tonight, I will post some pics. Dave

I have 7 - I purchased them all at the same time. They stay pretty tight now that I have intoduced some other fish. I would have purchased the whole school if there were more, they don't take up much space and they tend to ship poorly. I was lucky and have not lost any.

i was wondering how many Apogon leptacanthus are in the group?

Not sure about that - Dwayne has both the knowledge, commitment and equipment, the rest is up to the coral.

Nice frags, they will color up nicely once 250G gets them in his new system.

SO..............

I have done some work. Yesterday I removed the unsightly T5 fixture and installed my 36" Illumina 260. All I can say is WOW. The light is BRIGHT, and the spectrum is very nice. I will need to learn how to tweek the setting, and the blue seems a little off at actinic time. Are you suposed to use the blue or royal blue for actinics night time viewing...

Also - the quality of the fixture and the ease to set-up pleased me, then again for the price I pretty much expected perfection:

The T5's to the LED:

I also had a productive day at the LFS. Picked up a 2" black tang and 4 bartlett anthias. Nice when you get your hands on a black tang the same size or smaller than your anthias! He will mannage in the 55 till I get the 90.

I saw that reflection - perhaps Alex can give the SPS a motivational speech about the importance of ABC, in this case Always Be Colorful, not to be confused with Always Be Closing :)

Yup - $30, a classic blue base with green coralite stag and one wild mille ( blue tips and possible a pink base). They had a surprising amount of SPS there for $30...was I not going the frag route I could have easily bought many more. $28 bartletts!

Royal blue is what I suspected and am using, the pop is a littly more crazy that I am accustom with VHO actinic or T5 actinic!

$30.....NAFB?

Thanks, and ya me to. I have plans to get some of my old stock back and hopefully some new ones so I am optomistic. 9 months from now I look forward to seeing what the tank looks like.

Good luck with the new build. I hope you able to achieve the level of success you had in the past.

I will need to do a little research on the red pads - they sound intriguing, and if they don't please me I could always remove them. Once I get a wide variety of colors in the tank I will consider it. Red supplements primarily highlights the reds, blues and pinks correct?

Atlas is the construction/design side of Advanced Reef Aquatics in Toronto. After about 15 years of doing this, they are the only place I would recommend for a premium custom tank.

Thanks for the info, Dave. Were there any variables which could have caused the seam breakage, such as filling too early after construction ... Considering your close proximity perhaps they rushed/sacrificed silicone cure time for an early delivery ?

Ive been considering them, along with A.G.E, for a future 72x36x24or27 build ... You dont hear many negative first hand comments about them, so your info/experience with a similar sized tank build is invaluable.

agreed, knowledge and a commitment to making it just that much better than the other builders out there.....maybe elements not noticeable to the newer hobbyist but definitely to the more experienced of us out there.

Oh man....I am jealous that you saw it!!!! I am really excited. I have been working Tim and he has been amazing. These guys really know what they are doing. I have a builder 20 minutes from my house but their prices are crazy high. Cant wait to see your tank develop.

Anytime. My question to "the builder", was the reason my tank failed due to poor design or poor workmanship? At the end of the day, they said it was neither... Their rationale was that was the tank was moved before the silicone cured...............yet remarkably they were busting my b@lls to get the tank out of their shop!!! I received the tank one week "late" according to them!!! I suspect it was an air bubble in a seam of silicone...

I would strongly recommend speaking to an experienced guy about your tank if this is your first serious/high end custom starphire reef tank. Consider speaking to Flavio at Atlas/ Advanced Reef, he will discuss every aspect of your tank imaginable, so you don't feel you missed out on anything after the fact. As you can see above, many people from the US are starting to purchase from them. Just my 2 cents. Let me know if you have any other questions.......can't wait for my new tank...hoping next week or so.

Can you give an update on how the Vertex Illumina is working out for you with SPS

Thanks

Sorry for the delay in posting....unmotivated as I have not yet gotten the new tank. The new tank in rimless.....

Overall, I am pleased. Given the limitations of a smaller system, I think the coral color is great and the growth is excellent. I don't have some of the same colors as I had with the halides, but I think I will get there once I have a little extra water volume and increase the intensity of the light a little more. I am NOT displeased I spent SO much on the light.....and I let you know if I was!

Hang in there Dave. Hopefully they will get you your tank soon. Mine was delivered last week and I was totally blown away by their work and the one piece euro brace on it. I am so happy that I chose them to build my tank and it will be worth the wait.

Why are you losing interest? :hmm2:

Is it the hobby in general?

Or is it something specific to your setup thats the issue?

They must have seen your post of the miracles tank so they are taking an extra few weeks to make sure that silicone is cured real nice

exactly

I thinks its because he's been waiting for 4 months for his new tank.

I saw the tank all together a few weeks back, they were just building the overflow. Perhaps just busy with other things.

I picked up three nice aquaculture colonies yesterday.....one which I have never seen before. I may try and get a "before" picture of it...kinda unique IMO. Whitish base, yellow coralites, pink tips and blue polyps. Will be interesting to see how it changes. Also got a pink mille and a nice coral I suspect will look exactly like my old Ruby Red subulata (or hyacinthus), I can't remember.

Gotta put a call in today about the tank.....I want it for next weekend so I can get this system finalized, up and running proper...

I went over yesterday to take a look and chat.

The tank is together and the overflow attached, there was just a problem with the one piece acrylic overflow which resulted in the delay.

I am picking it up Thursday! I will have it up and running next weekend.

Sadly I lost a frag today...........naturally the green and red polyp cap I was planning on growing out large.........bummer. Can't wait to get my reactor online.

Time to start getting excited about it again!!!

any word on the tank dave?

Thats great news about the tank Dave but sorry to hear about the cap! Its always something in this hobby right?

I found out at 11pm last night that I got a bad batch of reef crystals. All of sudden my nitrates were up to 20ppm and phosphates were around .10 on my 80g where all of my live stock is. I couldn't figure it out until I tested a fresh bath of water that I made this morning. TDS is zero but nitrates and phosphates are present in the fresh batch. Never a dull moment. Final straw for me and Reef Crystals.

I just bumped into Dave today by co-incidence (at the LFS of course). He had his tank in order for a while but had a crash not too long ago due to a faulty dosing pump.....sucks but I'm sure he can still make a strong come back.

Believe it or not, I am completely out of the hobby for the time being.

I have not had a tank running since about August.................first time I have not had a SW tank in almost 20 years! Had I had I made it to September it would have been 20 years.

I purchased a waterfront property in cottage country and will be building a place up their, so I had to let the tank go. Sadly. Building it myself and going up there will result in not enough time spent enjoying it, and too much cash going out.

I will be living vicariously though this website. My LFS is selling my Vertex Illumina used for me, that is the last of my equipment.
