Are there any macro algae that can be mounted or planted in the sand and survive in the main DT? Just from the photos, some look even prettier than corals. Plus I'm sure it'll keep the water healthier too.

You could probably get any kind of macro algae to grow in your DT but you run the risk of it taking your tank over. You can make your fuge a display fuge so you can enjoy looking at your macro. Doing this would also keep the macro from taking about your tank(caloupra not included).

C. prolifera is a nice one that can be kept in the sand. It doesn't grow too fast, but it does spread. I haven't had a problem with mine in any of my tanks. There's also C. mexicana, but it will grow a bit faster. Not as fast as the short bladed caulerpa, though. I just keep it in the sand, and I have no worries.

Halimeda would work.
