sexxxy!! looks like a male tho? I thought they were all females, then again i have no experience with these fish at all.

When ordering on the website there are two different places to order it, one for a female and one for a male. Male was $50 more.

reefjunkie42
12/20/2011, 03:05 PM
yea when i ordered there were no males on there yet.

OMG..................highway robbery at it's best. People that buy these fish at those prices are gonna be sorry.

A few years ago my LFS had like 20 of the males in a tank & the were maybe $50. I understand certain Red Sea fish haven't been available recently, but I think it would smart to be patient right now.

aquaph8
12/20/2011, 05:59 PM
I thought they would be more considering how scarce they've been for a while. I think the demand is high enough now that you'll never see them $50 again. Look at what some of these other wrasses are going for. This hobby changed way too much in the last few years. Prices are high but it seems like were getting a lot healthier fish these days too. Worth the price their charging? Maybe not, I dont know but awesome fish either way.

reefjunkie42
12/20/2011, 06:09 PM
The collection methods used to get many of these fish to us are the reasons for the price being so high, and by the way that male johnsoni is rediculess! What colors. If you know anything about wrasses you recognize 200 as a Good deal for a fish that hasnet been for sale in years. IMO price is pertinent to the buyer, what someone thinks is alot to one could be not as much to others. In all to each is own and I love wrasses :-)

Agree with both of you guys. These haven't been available for a while "publically" like this which is why they are more than your normal wrasse. I know some people got some last year when this vendor brought in about 6 of them, but they are the only vendor I've heard that has had them in the last few years. Additionally, this wrasse is larger than most and is highly sought due to the visual display of flashing its 'larger than most wrasses' fins when displaying or courting. This is the one reason I really want the Paracheilinus attenuatus.

As for price...its supply and demand at its best. There are MANY wrasse junkies on the boards and are all looking for that 'rare' or uncommon wrasse for their collection. Just like antiques or stamp collecting, some pieces are worth the extra money to complete/add to your collection. :fish2:

It's a gamble. I saw a GORGEOUS pair of wild bicinctus clowns about 7 years ago for $50 and just didn't have a tank for them. I thought, no biggie, I'll get some later. And here we are... :(

Yeah, I was thinking about that since its the holiday season. However I've never had a shipment be held up...especially on UPS since I live about 20 min from their world hub. That said I probably just jinxed it, haha.

I might call Michael tomorrow and figure it out.

reefjunkie42
12/20/2011, 11:16 PM
It's your call bud at this point it's not about the money or a credit, because who knows when they will be available again, i have only had a shipment held up once, and the fish was fine, naoke fairy wrasse. I was so stressed out but he made it 2 days in a box. Still with me today. Either way I hope all works out for everyone I know for 1 I'm very happy to own these fish, I never though it would come through. Now p. attainaus and im going to be good for awhile.i will have a hard time acquiring that though. Either way can't wait to see what these fish look like in person

I smell vendors taking advantage of a situation right now. Similar to what happened with blotchy anthias and the white gap gobies.

White cap gobies went from $900 to $140 in a matter of months.

I have no problem understanding paying a premium for deepwater wrasses, terminal males or rare pairs.

Like the examples above, it feels like price gouging. I'm just offering up a buyer beware, because there seems to be no morals in this hobby anymore.

aquaph8
12/21/2011, 07:35 AM
Ed I completely agree but what do you do? If you call their bluff, you could wait longer. They'll probably drive the price up more in the next couple years for any reason they can think of.

I could be wrong, but I really don't think RS 8 lines were $50, a few years ago, or even 10 years ago.

pacislandaqua
12/21/2011, 12:53 PM
they were 80-100$ a few years back pretty consistently. However, everything in the red sea went up in price, and from what i understand the 8-lines are deeper and more remote than the purples/sohals/semilarvatus etc. Plus the shipping is round-a-bout which adds a lot of extra expenses.

i think 200$ for a large male is a fair retail price now a days...

paucifasciatus butterflies will be more than 600$... those are expensive little things. lol

i floated them and everything, im aware of a dead fish when i see it, i understand your just trying to help, but its so stressful losing expensive fish., when i opened the bag i could readily smell decay.. like something died, it wasnt a horrible smell, but you could tell there was something dead in the bag. and low and behold he was.. I called michael at nya. waiting for his response.

Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear that. I hope NYA pulls through for you on at least on the refund. He really should have held these for at least a week from being shipped halfway across the globe.

My male has a slight cut on his tail on the right side but the female looks flawless. At least mine are in a QT where they can relax and not be pestered by a bunch of other wrasses. After a few days I'll start them on a Furan-2 treatment since the little wrasse in the QT needs it as well.

Keep me updated on here or PM on how it turns out. I'll take some more pics later today.

honestly, i have received over 50 -60 wrasses. and i can usually tell when one looks good or bad, and none of these look too good. I can almost bet my second female will die today or tomorrow, she has yet to move at all. usually when you receive wrasses they hide for like 30-60 minutes, then as soon as you turn your light on they are usually checking things out. only 1 is checking things out so that leads me to believe the other female will die. It really sucks getting screwed and i hope it doesnt happen

My female starting eating right into the QT and I think the male ate a mysis or two...but not sure. The female was already checking out the tank and the male was laying on his side. Now that I kept the light off and just turned back on he's sitting upright with his dorsal fin out (its huge and red with a blue line on the outside).

Hopefully your female pulls through as that still wouldn't be a bad combination to have as you'd get to watch her turn into a beautiful male.

I talked to mike and he is sending a new male after the holiday. Hoping for the best when it arrives now the waiting begins again, thank you everyone for the kind words and hope. I would love for her to pull through but it doesn't look good. Tomorrow will be a pretty good indicator weither or not she'll make it. In hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.

I have been having horrible luck with wrasses lately,I think I lost a lunatus after escaping the acclimation box, no sign of her and my female johnsoni has recently developed an eye condition where her eye has blown up to the size of a goldfish eye, she has been in hiding for going on 4 days. I have seen her 3 times and she looks to be in pain. I'm going to have to remove all my rock and sps in order to even find her to treat her. Ah the things we

Well, Ive had a little time to calm down and I talked with Michael at NYA and were also gonna give it another shot. Maybe these guys will ship better after having a week to chill out. Ill let everybody know how it goes next week. On a possitive note my Potters wrasse that was in the same order is doing well and is eating mysis in QT already. I can answer that question. He got them in at around noon on Tuesday and shipped them all back out on Wednesday. This is the reason I wanted to wait until being shipped on Thursday to at least give them a day to rest, but with Christmas quickly approaching I knew if the delivery didn't make it Friday it would be doomed.

In reality he should have taken pre-orders and held them for at least a week or so before shipping back out.

Edit: I'm not bashing NYA at all here, just my own personal opinion

SDguy
12/23/2011, 10:43 AM
It's OK, I really don't think it's bashing to simply be discussing possible mistakes that can be avoided in the future. I'd like to think everyone involved only wants the best for these fish.

Absolutely. We're all at fault here...NYA is a business and wants/needs to make money and we as hobbyists want these rare/uncommon fish in their tanks ASAP...

Sometimes the excitement of something overpowers the right thing to do and we don't realize it until after the fact. I really should have gone with my first instinction to have him hold mine til after Christmas to give them a much better chance.

Lesson learned for all of us :fish1:

My female didn't make it either, it is sad that all these fish died:-( such an uncommon specimen dead! It kills me I wish we didn't even have them, I feel like all this could have been avoided. Sucks

aquaph8
12/23/2011, 03:22 PM
I agree that sometimes our excitement out weighs doing the right thing but they should have never been listed on the website the same day they arrived. These arent even fragile fish IMO, they're pretty hardy. Its sad things went this way, hopefully things go better next time. RJ42, sorry about the female I hoped she would through for you.

Thanks aqua me too:-/ I agree they shouldn't have been listed, or preorder only something like that. But that isn't our call, I rememeber saying if they look good ship them, that is a call he as a supplier needed to make. I had no Bearing on the decision. Idk it's kind of unfortunate. Well....had to send another email cause my Debelius wrasse I got from him didn't make it but a full week. Had some type of contusion on his head and tried to medicate him but he never came around. Out of a decent sized order....I ended up with 3 damsels and a Lamarks angel. Three wrasses, one 8 line, and 2 damsels all coming for NYA didn't make it. A few were DOA, one lasted a day, and this one a week.

On a side note, other fish coming in from a different vendor the same day last week are doing awesome....just throwing that in there before somebody says....its your setup, etc :)

This isn't about the 8 line wrasses but about the some other wrasses i got last week from NYA. I bought the harem of psychead wrasses from them. When they arrived the male and 1 female were already dead. The male must of died right after he shipped them because the water had such a foul odor and it looked pretty bad. I emailed him the photos right away. Funny thing was he said those guys usually ship "pretty well" and all the research i've done say they ship horribly. Long story short he offered to send me a replacement pair that arrived on 12/22. Female was DOA and male was barely alive (all his fins were tore up along with his mouth). I knew he wasn't gonna make it but still acclimated for 3 hours and put him in qt. He died that night. I didn't bother calling NYA because their guarantee does not cover replacements. This is the second time that I've bought fishes from them and I don't have a single fish to show for it. Both times that i ordered from him-I always ask if they're eating and he always says they're eating and doing great. And this last time he charged me $85 to ship (i've never paid that much for shipping-even from Hawaii). He won't get me a third time.

Sorry- not trying to derail this thread. Just wanted to pass along my experiences with this vendor where these beautiful 8 line wrasses are coming from. I hope they all make it for you guys.

i do appreciate the message, but it should be in the vender feedback forum, id like to keep this geared toward 8lines and their success in captivity, feeding, behavior, ect.

On a side note(not trying to prove you wrong or anything like that) but i bought 2 female psychead wrasses from him, and they were alive and well. still with me. they are about amonth old and eat well and arent skinny. Im not saying your wrong, but males do ship bad, thats why i opted for 2 females. hoping 1 would change(not sure if anampses species can even change like this) also he did follow the gaurentee, I got the same thing a while back, thats the reason i canceled the order, cant risk losing 600+ of fish. and only have 1 shot, no back up. but he did apologize for the deaths and agree that the reason was they shipped to fast and he admitted it was his fault. as for your order i dont know the details, but also you mentioned QT it is recommeded to qt everything, that said i didnt these because of there fragile nature and need for an established sand bed and LR. HTH

Wow! We haven't been on much with the holidays, so just stumbled upon this thread.

Sorry to say we also purchased a pair of them and ended up with a DOA male. The other is not in great shape - mouth damage, missing a ventral fin and a tear in it's anal fin. It spent the first two days laying in the corner of our QT tank and we were a bit dubious about whether it would pull through. Thankfully, it took a turn for the better on Sunday. It is much more aware of it's surroundings now, swimming some and eating mysis. We're cautiously optimistic that it will make it.

We're feeling guilty for not talking w/Mike on the phone and asking how long he had the fish prior to shipping. Had we been aware, we would have waited.

Good for you Brett...wishing you well on this new shipment.

My female is now eating mysis, bloodworms, and NLS. She was flashing the heck out of the newcomer to the QT yesterday morning. I put in a nice male Blue Flasher I got from the LFS and she opened up big time, flashing him all over the tank. He was flashing back, but they quickly learned to live with one another and were fine after an hour or so.

Great pics. Mine doesn't look as striking....hopefully cause I have a 6500 bulb on the QT tank and it makes fish look pale, haha.

The small issue on mine looks to be healing up as she's in her 4th day of the Furan-2 treatment which is at its strongest today. Tomorrow will bring a 25% water change and carbon to clear up the water.

How long do you plan to keep her in the QT tank?

So I can't fault him for that. I think we all just got swept up on wanting these fish, however I would have not minded waiting, especially at the cost of losing such rare fish hobby wide, that's the most tragic of all of this, that we took them

Want to get your thoughts on pairing up the two. I have the male coming next week and he'll be going into the QT. Do you think it's best to keep the female in the QT when I introduce him or should I move her to the DT by then?

You should be fine in regards to getting one if you placed the order, but because of the New Years holiday and the early cutoff time it probably won't ship til Tuesday for Wednesday delivery.

OK guys, I am thinking if any of us havent received a tracking number we probably wont. My thinking on this is because when I ordered around noon, the email said it will be filled from available stock on the day shipped, and since they are yanked from LA Im thinking that they are all gone, what does everyone think?.. how many people should be getting theres tomorrow?

I got my shipping info at 6pm. Scheduled for delivery tomorrow. :) I just checked and they're out of stock now. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....

< is glad you guys are getting them but also i dont feel so special as not alot of people had these so i felt special, especially since it too me so long to get mine
and really not liking bradley right now lol

I can understand your feelings but out of the thousands of members on rc and millions in the hobby, at least only 4-5 of us are picking one up and we're all wrasse nuts so its not too bad. Plus who knows which ones will survive, who will actually get one, etc.

Oh, and I hate bradley too ;)

Nice, thanks for the information. I ordered a male from LiveAquaria for $89.99. Incredible.

Hope everybody jumps on this and can get a replacement for a third of the price.

Like I have reiterated twice in this thread.................be patient & let the prices come down to acceptable levels. A week later & it's $90.

I miss the days when flashers and faires weren't the 'cool' fish to have. I was able to stock my 125 flasher/ fairy tank for the cost of what these individuals are costing now!

I dunno... I don't recall Red Sea fish ever being very cheap... I certainly don't miss the days of $1K asfur angels

Jeremy Blaze

True. Whatever happened to all those cheap tank bred angels we were supposed to start seeing?

Grouchy old salt here! ;)

I got my red sea flashers about 5-6 years ago, for less than $40 I know. Of course these fuel and freight costs have gone up so much since then, that plays a factor in it as well as demand.

SDguy
12/30/2011, 07:59 AM
Yeah, about 4 years ago I got a purple tang for $40 and my asfur for $80. I think that's the cheapest I ever saw any Red Sea fish.

I don't know about you guys but I don't buy the wrasses cause they are "cool" I buy them because of their colors and being very active fish with little aggression.

Prices went up when they stopped bringing them in, just like the Purple tangs, Chevron tangs, and more. They used to be dirt cheap and abundant, but once they quit coming in, prices shot up for the few that do show up.

Hey, where was the 8-line club before? I posted here about getting one from NYA about a year ago and heard only crickets.

Hope you guys enjoy them! Mine didn't last long due to overly-aggressive Pink Margin but it's a beautiful fish and tempted to try out another one

shipment arrived and I snuck out of work for an hour to acclimate the new arrival and take a quick phone pic. I'll get better ones tonight. The fish looks good and he's a good size (probabaly a bit shy of 3 inches) i'm always reluctant to get non wysiwyg fish but i'm definatly happy with this one.

From what I have seen lately these rare wrasses come in at the same time, places like LA and Pacific Island I know QT and that may be why they have a better survival rate than NYA, although I have no knowledge or clue how NYA does business so its unfair for me to assume. What I do know is how the other 2 do bisiness and I get a lot from PIA for my store and always look great and healthy and hopefully some of these beauties will make it my way for my home collection :)

Jeremy Blaze
12/31/2011, 08:13 AM
Is Pacific Island Aquatics a retailer or a wholesaler?

I wasn't accusing anyone of buying them because they are cool, but they certianly have become more cool and popular in the hobby, which has caused an artificial inflation of the retail price.

The Red Sea thing is weird. Everything was super expensive in the 90's, then they started importing more, and prices started dropping a lot in the 2000's ,then, BOOM! Everything jumped way up.

Purple tangs were $150 sm, then by 2001 you could get them for $75, now they are back up near $200. Retail pricing wise.

What disappointed me with flashers, was they never looked as good as the super male in flashing mode pics you always see.

I like flashers and faries, had many of them, including some of the first pairs of Debelus that came into the hobby years ago.

I much rather see these get popular, become cool, and attract the attention they deserve, as apposed to the CULLS, or I mean Designer, Clownfish that are bringing rediculous money.

Now if we could just start breeding some of these wrasses, and take the burden off the wildstocks, that would be something!

Breeding wrasses would be awesome. I know that LADD has a spawning pair of Johnsoni right now.

PIA is a retailer and a sponsor of RC.

Cool. it would be awsome, and should be doable. Unfortunatly, captive breeding marines is not yet the easily profitable venture, so it may never really happen on a large scale. But it seems to be working for ORA, so maybe at some point others will invest in it.

my johnsoni spawns nightly, most wrasses do, but it is very very hard to breed the larvae. fairy wrasses unlike flashers are neat spanwers, as flashers are messy. hence more hybrid flasshers than fairies.:) Happy New years..im off to work...

i quickly read through this tread and if you are ordering through fed ex its best to find out your hub and have it held there as you can pick them up a 8;30 guaranteed . they have to be on the truck by 8 am so they can all leave at or before 9 am and if you have them held there you can just go there and get them at 8;30 . i have done this many ,many times myself. also the eight line flasher is such a delicate shipper that i would suggest that you acclimate them and put them directly into your display tank as they will have so much better of a chance imo.

aquaph8
01/02/2012, 05:38 PM
They do just fine in QT too. I never understood putting a hungry fish in a tank with a bunch of competition when you can put them in a tank by themselves and give them a little R and R and a fat belly. I have way too much money invested in fish to risk anything getting in my display.

FWIW, my female 8 line did great in quarantine and is still in there. She's swimming around nicely in there with one small Blue flasher and 2 small damsels. She's getting braver as the days go by and rarely runs to hide when I come to the tank now.

Can't wait to get the male this week and watch the reactions. Hopefully everyone gets along great :)

Well...I thought this was pretty interesting....

LiveAquaria called me today and asked me if I was looking for the Paracheliinus or the Pseudocheilinus...in which I explain Paracheliinus of course :) They said that the vendor didn't have any males and that I'd be getting a 'small' wrasse now. Kind of disappointed since they listed a male...I purchased a male...and they wanted to send me a small/female. With no choice, I agreed with an explanation saying that it was kind of a bait and switch....to which they apologized profusely.

A few minutes later, I get a call back saying they had a few of those wrasses in Wisconsin at the Divers Den facility and they would send me one of those instead. She said they were still female but 3 inches long. Still kind of disappointed that I'm getting a female (since I already have one) but I assume that one will change, plus I'm still happy getting it for $89.99, especially one from the Divers Den facility and not QM.

They apparently had a major mixup. The item number they had listed for the $89 one was for the 8line fairy from indonesia, not the 8line flasher from Red Sea. But the description and picture was of the Red Sea fish. They told me to expect a phone call about it around 9am my time.
