My tank came with 2 canopies, one about 4" high, was used for vho, and one about 15" high used with MH pendants. I am currently looking for lights and really like the smaller canopy better than the huge one. Tank is 24" deep. I was thinking 250w mh, but was wondering if I could get away with retro in the smaller canopy of 150w. The light is 3" high, and the water is about 1-2" below the top bracket of tank, so the lights would be about 2-3" above the water line. Is it too low? I would think 250w at that level would be too much, but wondering about 150 or even a 70.

3" in a Retro is way to low. Your gonna need atleast 6-7 inches of space between the bottom of the reflector to the water or top of the tank. What are you trying to grow? If its just fish or some softies then just use the t5.

The wattage doesn't matter. Water will splash on the bulb or shields cracking them.

Halides will need the taller canopy.
