On my 40B I have the overflow as a 1" 1/2 PVC Elbow facing upwards with a BioBall as the filter. I have a question, if the piping some how gets clogged, how do I prevent my display tank from overflowing if the return is still running? Speaking as if I wasnt around while the piping gets clogged. This is my first DIY.

To be honest with you I would ditch the elbow and spring for an overflow kit. I picked up one from gl*******s.com for around 40-60 bucks depending on how much flow you want. Either that or build a box yourself.

Only way to prevent floods is to have backup drains. Look into the bean method.
