View Full Version : mp60 too much flow on 60 gal tank?

I currently have an mp10wes. I am entertaining the idea of either adding another mp10 for better flow or ditching the mp10s and going with an mp60. If I dial the mp60 way down - would that be too much flow in a 36x24x16 tank with an inch sand bed? Mixed reef tank. The tank is peninsula style so it would go on one of the sides of the overlow pointing in the long 36" length direction...but also keeping in mind a couple inches to either side of the mp'xx' will be glass (glass side pain or glass overflow)...not sure that matters that much. 8" glass, 8" overflow, 8" glass - 24" wide.

Also tank is made of 1/2" glass which the mp10's don't adhere to all that well. Thanks for your input.

2 mp10 or 1 mp40 in the right spot

Just out of curiosity why wouldn't you consider an MP40 instead of the MP60? IMO the MP40 would be plenty for your tank.....

How about 1 mp10 and an mp40.

MP60 would be great if you like big spots of drifting sand and fish stuck to the side of the glass :)

What are you going to keep? That would say a lot in how much flow. MP60's are LOUD

My mp60 is not loud.

I think it would be awesome but is definitely overkill.

I took mp60 out of my 125 gal, at 40% power it frought sand storm in my tank.

Agreed. Even on almost full blast it is quieter than my mp40w's(not es) at about 75%.

I agree you will end up with sandstorms in a 60. Keep the mp10 and buy a 40. It will give you great flow and you can keep both dialed down a bit to help keep noise levels down.

A second MP 10 would give you a better variety of flow possibilities.

I plan to keep mixed tank. The problem I might have is that this is a peninsula style tank so I won't be able to position the mpxx in the center of the glass pain. Return flow will go on left side of overflow as will the mpxx to push filtered water throughout tank. So my options are two mp10's one on each side of overflow facing 36" length of tank or one mp40. This will be in my office so "loudness" is somewhat of priority.

Way over kill. I have 2 mp40 on my 60 and at 50% it a ton of flow.

that's funny. an mp60 on its lowest setting is still more flow then the 40 on its maximum setting.

Add an mp40. Plenty of flow with that mp10.
