Spectrapur is the best ro/di. Salt mix I'm sure a lot will say red sea. I switched from reef crystals tocotalife because it has higher calc. Decided yourself here is an analysis http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&sqi=2&ved=0CCIQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aqua-medic.com%2Faquariumwatertesting%2FAWT_Salt_Analysis_0208.pdf&rct=j&q=awt%20salt%20analysis&ei=Fkf_TvSxM8GrsAL53ryrBQ&usg=AFQjCNEwNV6ufxTDRtIkr6TJyXutAPGB0Q&sig2=FmzA7xxrM2vR4Wrt8CWPWw

IMO, there is no salt mix that stands above the rest, regardless of the cost. There are pros and cons of every mix, and you just need to know what those are for your application and respond accordingly. I personally choose to use ordinary IO.

And what Randy had to say about salt mixes goes for RO/DI units as well. They all use the same basic containters and there are only a couple of manufacturers of RO membranes in the country (FilmTec being about the best). I've had several and they all work just fine.

I got a vertex ro/di 100 gpd unit and love it compared to the generic one I had before as it flushes the membrane before and after fitering and washes membrane on intervals. Also has booster pump and tds meter so you make best use of filters. Salt is toss up and no one has perfect mix!

As for RODI I have the AquaFX Mako http://www.aquariumwaterfilters.com/shop-by-product?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage-ask.tpl&product_id=58&category_id=12 and love it.And current salt Is Microblift reef salt...

My favorite salt mix is just that........a mix ......of Oceanic and Regular Tropic Marin. 1/2 and 1/2 gives great chemistry for a reef tank. The money I saved with using IO, was made up for spending on quality supplements to get the same results. There are alot of salts out there and to say one is the absolute best is all opinion. But, for sheer consistency, IO and TM are regarded by most to be the most consistent.

I think there are many good RO/DI units... As far as salt, not sure there is a clear winner.

I personally use a MAXCAP Spectrapure http://www.spectrapure.com/St_rodi_systems.htm and Reef Crystals.

Lol, a TDS reading of 0 is all you can achieve, so RO/DI units are all the same, 98% of them use filmtec membranes, perhaps the pentak DI cartridge lasts longer but carbon blocks & sediment filters are basically one in the same. I am a believer in the Instant Ocean brand salt mixes, Reef Crystals has worked awesome for me for 10 years now, however like others have stated, most "known" brand salt mixes are compatible or they would never sell.

i use BRS ro/di 75 GPD plus. comes with tds meter and gauge built in. and to be 100% honest with you i couldnt be happier with this unit. it comes with everything you need and its pug and play! and for salt ive been using instant ocean and its cool. imo salt mix is salt mix just make sure its not some knock off brand from walmart or something lol.

As long as the output from your RO/DI is zero it really doesn't matter which brand you use. If you have special needs IE; low water pressure or high TDS it's worth the extra cost to go to a specialty vendor. I have high quality input water with warm temp and good pressure, a generic RO/DI works for me.

I'm also a long time IO user.

Here are some things to look for in a good system for this hobby:

No more than 4 stages (sediment, carbon, RO, DI) unless you have specific water quality issues you want to address
Standard-sized prefilters, membrane, and DI cartridge
Brand name, high-rejection membrane
Specifications provided for each stage
Pressure gauge after the prefilters and before the membrane
Thermometer
TDS meter (handheld or in-line)
DI bypass
Vertical DI stage
Refillable DI cartridge
Aluminum bracket
Quick connect fittings
No water from pressurized storage container delivered to DI
Flush valve
Clear housings
High-quality instructions written in clear English
Customer support before, during, and after your purchase
A vendor involved in your hobby
