Welcome to the 2011 Nano Tank of the Year Contest (nTOTY). This contest is open to the 11 nTOTM winners of 2011. Before getting to the good stuff I just wanted to thank Reef Central for allowing us to put this contest up and for everything else they do throughout the year. Also I wanted to thank each of the past winners for entering the contest and that each one should be proud of what has been accomplished with these systems that have been considered either too difficult to care for or too simple because of their size in the past and should not be able to survive and prosper.

The contest is simple and follows the nTOTM contest. The overall winner is the one with the most votes and anyone viewing the contest can vote one time.

Below are the FTS of each tank and a link to the write up. This is the same link that has been posted in the past winners sticky by Agu.

Winners are invited to put up new pictures and/or talk about their tanks in any way they wish. Voters are welcome to ask questions and make comments as well because I want this to be a discussion as much as a contest and hopefully the dialogue will help to inspire someone else out there. However I ask that each voter take a few minutes and look at the links and make their voting decision based upon those pictures and write ups instead of any current shots a winner could provide.

Please consider the content of tanks as a decision maker instead of the quality of the photographs or video. Some have amazing photo skills and it is human nature to shift to those aspects.

One final note: this is a simple yet fun contest that I hope to see in the future. Again good luck to each of the past winners and thank you to those that took the time to read all of this and have taken the time to vote.

Ive never had a reeftank cause a non-contact contrecoup injury before that was a welcome blast of color bandit angel. your first tank, wow. just the corals on the substrate would cost me $2000 for sure retail thats shocking. I count 20+ rics at $49 a pop from my lfs and acan colonies ranging ~$90+
the red goni, another $150 that size etc

Wow man, $49 a head for rics?? Your LFS is overcharging!! :) They sell around here for $15 a piece.

So many awesome tanks on here, this is going to be a very tough decision!!

only one store in a town of 200,000= they set the price lol

online shipping is what makes it worth it to buy there. we'd save money ordering online if we were buying a huge amount of coral at once, but for cherry picking we've always paid double the norm sometimes. additional examples, one head of the bright yellow/green caulastrea is $25. I think the other problem is we keep paying lol.

Thank you for the sticky.

I hope that people are enjoying this too.

So for those that have voted or will what made you pick that specific tank as nTOTY?

I know that I have a list of things that I like to see etc. and was simply curious if others had them as well.

All NTOTM entries must be <34g to be eligible.

They are under the 34 gallon maximum size allowance. They would have been DQ'ed in the monthly contest.

Just curious but which one(s) do you think are over 34 gallons? The reason why I ask is one of those things that I think about when looking at nano tanks.

Here is a open question: Is it the goal of the nano keeper to make it look like a nano or do you want everyone to not know the tank is one?

For me I love the look of breeder style tanks so big footprint but shallow. and Hype just did it very well. it's not just a bunch of corals thrown on what looks like a mountain of live rock. it's thought out and beautiful. nice tank man.

Thank you to everyone who has voted. So far 112 people have taken the time to cast one. If you look this forum has around 230 people viewing it at normal hours.

If you have not voted yet please do.

If you are in the running take a few minutes and talk about your tank.

Did you have a plan going in or did things just come together?
Did it turn out how you wanted?
What changes would you make to it?
Are you happy with how it turned out?

Spill it!

Close for the top two runners! The one I voted for is on the bottom end but it's still a great tank IMO

Wow we have a week to go and we have over 200 votes, almost 1950 views and things are still too close to call.

I do find it interesting that the two tanks in the lead are polar opposites of one another as far as stocking.

In addition it is good to see that people are still voting for other tanks as well instead of just focusing on those two.

Good luck to everyone for the upcoming week and look forward to a conclusion to this.

Nor have I, but that's because I can't vote unless there's a tie (self imposed rule). Only had to vote once in the history of the contest and it wasn't pretty.

So please vote and keep me out of trouble ;).

01/20/2012, 09:31 AM
Thank you Steve.

Agu you are no longer in trouble.

I finally voted and it was a very hard decision to make. To be honest the tank I voted for was a tank that I liked but it was not until I went back to each of the winning write ups that I decided to cast my vote.

Good luck to everyone at the home stretch.

The only question is: Now what?

Very hard choice on which tank...they're all great! Good luck to everyone!

01/23/2012, 12:10 PM
Wow with less than 24 hours left the top two tanks are still within 5 votes of one another. There have been several lead changes and a few times that one tank started to pull ahead only to be caught (and passed) only to leave again. It has been very interesting to watch the voting and great to see that people continued to vote for the tank they thought was the best instead of just going with the top 2.

Thank you to everyone who made this interesting.

Each of the entries are amazing and I know that I have given much thought to their way of doing things these last few weeks.

One final good luck to you guys and gals.
