I am custom building a stand for my 75 gallon marine land tank.

I have finished building the basic frame.

I am wondering, is there a reason why most stands are made where the tank is placed 1" below into the wooden frame. so tank bottom frame is surrounded by wood. (if you know what I mean?)

I want to place my tank just flat on top. Is this safe???

Will the tanks plastic fram be able to hold the water with no issues.

Here is a pic of how I am placing my tank.

Stands are recessed only to hide the plastic trim with wood for a cleaner look. There are many stands that are flat on top- really it is only in the late eighties that this "hidden trim started".

Yes, you can keep it sitting the way it is, or put up some decorative board(crown molding) to cover up the bottom plastic frame for the tank.

Yes, the plastic frame will have no problem holding the glass together. The water stays in due to the silicone placed inside the tank on the seams of the glass. Do not remove the plastic frame because it holds the glass together and if there is a strap/brace across the top of the tank(front to back), that keeps the glass from bowing when filled with water.

I have only ever used flat top stands.
