View Full Version : Questions about clams
Hello everyone,
I want to keep a clam but don't know anything about them.
Which one of them is easy to keep?
I just take it home, place it on a flat piece of rock and they will attach their foot to the rock and stay there?
My tank is a 75 gallons with the dimension of 48"x 18"x21"H. I have a 6 bulbs sunpower over it. How high should I place the clam?
Thanks,
Bao

Crocea are the 'easiest'.
Looks like you have enough light.
How old is the tank?

Hey,
There are a few different varieties of clams and each have their own requirements.
Crocea and maximas prefer to be on rockwork, derasa prefer the sand.
Your lights should be good.
I have a crocea about 10" under a 250w halide and he loves it.
Overall, they are fairly easy, just keep good water (simple, right?:).
Also, there is lots of good info in the clam section here on RC -- just surf and around and search for good reading.

if you can keep LPS, you can keep all clams.
with a 75 G and 6 bulbs ATI fixture [good reflectors] you are fine with clams on sand bed too.
if you place it on rock, it can jump off ! some secure it.
I have SPS and LPS in my tank. The tank has been running for about a year in the new location but before that it has been running for 3 years in a different room.
Do they really consume alot more cal than SPS?
I think I will go for a Crocea or maximas because they won't grow so big. After placing it on a flat piece of rock, how do I secure it?? glue it to the rock or place many small pieces of rock around it?

they do consume alot of CA++ but I am not sure if its more than a healthy/growing SPS consumes or not ...
I wouldnt glue it. I have seen ppl make a little "seat" for the clam using epoxy though . like a little half circle. let it dry on rock then place clam behind it so it cant jump off ...

See if you can get hold of a copy of James Fatherree's book, Giant Clams in the Sea and the Aquarium. It's my favorite reef book; it's informative but not dry and boring like chemistry books.

Do not glue it. Place it into a natural or man-made trough on the rock where you want to it be (with its mantle facing the light).
