So, I've been working on my aquascaping lately and can't seem to come up with anything that I like. I don't have any really large pieces of LR so I just come up with various rock piles. I'm not using any epoxy putty, glue or pvc for support, so I'm wary of piling too high. I live in a rural area so it's difficult to just run out and buy some epoxy. I know that marketing in the modern world causes some products that are chemically identical to be much more expensive due to different packaging... such as commercial deck wash. It's just sodium hypochlorate (clorox bleach) that has already been diluted and sold for around 6 dollars a gallon. So, I've been looking at epoxy resins that aren't marketed for aquarium use and wondered if anyone here has tried them with any degree of success? My local walmart has this stuff in stock: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Peerless-Plumbing-Epoxy-Putty/17043690 and I question how different it really is from this stuff:http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3961 I want to err on the side of caution here, so I'm not going to just grab it and hope for the best, I'd rather hear from anyone here with more experience than I.

I would think that either of those would be fine but I can tell you this. If you head on over to automotive section at Walmart, this is safe and I use it all the time. It mixes up white and coralline soon covers it.

I've had good luck with the tube of Plumber's Epoxy with the Ace Hardware label on it at the local hardware store. Works fine. No markups for "marine-grade" or anything. It may very well be made on the same line as the stuff posted above available at Wally-World.

Thank you guys for the input! I'm definately more comfortable giving the stuff at wal mart a go now.

I use the WaterWeld epoxy putty also. It tends to make my skimmer go crazy, so I shut it off for a few hours.
